JCW Exhaust Install Video

My husband and I put on my JCW exhaust yesterday and decided to take pictures of the steps then make a video. I know that this is showing the JCW, but the same idea goes for all exhaust installs. Enjoy

Very nice. Thank you. Sounds great. Just wish you didn't have to cut the pipe. Did you just use the back box or did you also use the midpipe?

Thanks. I used the midpipe as well. It was super easy to cut it with a pipe cutter. I actually cut the stock midpipe off the muffler for easier storage as well. At this point I don't ever plan on going back to stock.

Great video!

Is there a difference in diameter between the two exhausts? (midpipe and muffler) They look similar.

They are the same size. The difference is in removing the resonator and adding a better flowing muffler/tips.

Got a video on how to get the entire car on jack stands? I'm still not clear on "safe areas" to jack the car while leaving room to place a stand...

I don't have a video of that sorry. I did use this site as reference.

http://www.blimeycabrio.com/?p=76

I also found a pic of the underside of the car that helped. To give you a better idea, I marked out where to place the board in red, and where to place the jack on the board with the X. I ended up using a 1x4" because that is all i had, but a 2x4" would work as well. The jack stands go where the factory jack would go. There are tabs on the underside of the car that you can see when you look. They are about where the lift points in this picture are

As the website above states, this is a do it at your own risk thing. It worked for me just fine, but I am super careful.

Great job on the video and thank you for sharing. How did you re-install the new pipe and did the JCW exhaust kit come with the clamp.

Thanks.

I wasn't actually expecting the video!! Thanks for the information! That helps. When I tried to jack mine up, I realized that there was no way for me to jack and place stands on the jack tabs. I tried to shift the jack forawrd a bit and as soon as I started to realize stuff was beginning to bend, I stopped.

I did hear about using the 2x to help distribute the load, but did not have an idea of where to place it that would lift the chassis and not punch a 2x shaped hole through a floorboard!

Thanks for the tip - much appreciated!

Thanks. The new pipe simply slides over the OEM pipe that you have to cut, then secure with a clamp. The muffler then slides over the other end of the pipe and you clamp that as well. The JCW kit does come with 2 clamps. I have attached a pic of what you get in the boxes. The tips are not on all the way in the picture. The other is showing that the actual muffler says JCW on it, whereas, the OEM muffler does not.

Well it is actually a very good idea for a video to be honest. I searched for a while before being comfortable enough to actually lift the car that way. I know it says to put it under the black part/side skirt, but I was worried about cracking them. I might try it that way next time to see if it feels any better. The other place worked just fine, but as I said I am super careful and paranoid about stuff like that. When I swapped out my winter wheels I actually just used the factory jack on each corner. The new way is so much easier/faster and less hard on the arms haha.

Amy, Could you tell if there is any difference between the stock and jcw muffler? Or is the jcw kit really just a resonator delete kit?

I bought it from Sewell Mini

It is a bit louder than stock, but not obnoxious. The popping is louder for sure.

Here is a before and after

And a cold start after I installed the VIP intake as well

I can't say anything about the internals of the muffler itself. They do look almost the same, but the new muffler does have a JCW stamped on it though.

I know the tips are actually R56 tips, as the JCW has the tips attached to the body kit so the muffler itself doesn't have any tips welded on it like the factory S muffler does. That being said, I am sure most of the sound is from the resonator delete pipe, but supposedly the internals of the JCW muffler are less restrictive as well.

Thanks for great videos!

I'm just curious about thing nobody mentioned (or at least I haven't found it)- does installation of this exhaust has any effect on SPORT mode? Does it "pops" all the time with JCW Exhaust, or is it changing sound with pushing the button (just like OEM, but louder)? Thank You for Your answer!

i'm going to be getting ready to install my exhaust next weekend and have a few questions for anyone who can answer...

are there included instructions indicating where exactly to cut the factory exhaust in front of the resonator ?

from what i gather the tubing is 2-1/2" diameter.. Amy.. you said you used a tube cutter to cut your pipe, did you buy it just for this install ? if so where ? that's a mighty big tube cutter to get at a local store.

the tips set with an allen screw ? no welds are needed correct ?

...by the way, great video amy, without it i would have never even attempted it on my own, but everything looks clean and straight forward.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I just started a new job and I haven't had much time for anything else lately. I hope your install goes/ went smoothly. I ended up buying the pipe cutter for about $25 at Sears. I figure I might need it someday for something haha. You are correct about the tips.

Great job posting the instructions! I don't think they were available when I did mine.

congrats on the new job and thanks for replying. the "instructions" had what i was really looking for and it's that 13mm cut behind the resonator. they are also showing an additional cut where the midpipe meets the muffler and i'm not seeing a reason for that so i'll skip it unless things don't line up right. i'm guessing with the flex pipe from the down tube there's probably 40mm of play there. for cutting the pipe, i'm planning on using a sawzall, seems to be the easiest way. i'm still not 100% comfortable with the lift and jackstands the way it's set up now, i ordered a set of jacking blocks from wmw so they should help cradle the jackstand a little better to help stabilize it.

Thanks for the write-up and mention! Glad you enjoy the exhaust, it is a great addition to any R60S/SX!
