R56 What Did You Drive Before Your R56?
MAN MY CRX is running more than ever. 26 years now. I've redone quite a bit. The mini was to replace it, but now, the CRX will replace the mini!
GOING LIKE MY HAIR IS ON FIRE AND ALL THE WHILE 40 MPG
GOING LIKE MY HAIR IS ON FIRE AND ALL THE WHILE 40 MPG
I like a clean CRX
550i
Got rid of a BMW 550i to get the MCS...
The 550i is NICE... can't say anything bad
...BUT the MINI is much more fun... the real "ultimate driving machine"
I wanted to get rid of the 550i because:
- it was automatic
- I was getting about 14mpg
- potholes were killing the tires and wheels (although things are only marginally better in the mini with 17s)
- very expensive tires
- too much car for solo daily driving
- pretty expensive car
...wanted to get the 135i but didn't get it...
- they didn't have a 135i with manual shift to test drive... test drove a 135i convertible but that didn't impress me much at the price (I could have just kept the 550 then)
- drove the 128i automatic for a weekend... much more fun than the 328i and enough space to not complain (can easily fit a golf bag in the trunk)... but that was about it... 550i is MUCH better.
... then got a MCS 6spd
- about 14000 miles later, still can't stop smiling.
- getting 25mpg always in sport mode and changing gears only between 4000-6000rpm.
- tires are cheaper
- rattles are quite annoying but then it's the cheapest "BMW" that's out there... remedy is LOUD MUSIC
- sun roof noise is painful - remedy: LOUD MUSIC
- torque steer takes getting used to... RWD is more fun/better. I wish the mini could be AWD (not the 'Medium countryman').
- overall, even though it is NOT a practical car (no space, very rough ride, no spare, new squeaks or rattles every morning, wind noise etc etc) it is the most fun I have had in a while, while driving 50-90mph

1999 Jeep Wrangler
2005 Honda Element
2004 BMW 318ti - fun but couldn't bring it back to the US
2010 Infiniti G37 - fun but not enough head room
2010 Nissan Titan king cab - no fun and too much head room
(kept 2 Jaguar XJS cars up along the way as well - also gone)

1987 Chrysler Conquest <- first turbo'd car and RWD to boot. Turbos where a PITA back then.
1992 Dodge Daytona <- 4 timing belts in 1 year. hated that car
1997 Dodge Neon RT <- Drove it like I stole it, started using more oil than gas at 50,000 miles.
2005 Dodge Neon SXT <- Meh got me around town. Really wanted a SRT-4
2007 Subaru WRX Wagon <- Returned to my 4 cyl turbo roots.
2004 PT Cruiser <- Wife's first car, but I got stuck driving most of the time.
2001 Buick Century <- Long story
2008 Honda Fit <- Great little car, awesome dog-mobile. Thought about putting a turbo on it.
2009 Dodge Challenger SRT-8 6spd <- Bright Red, custom exhaust, loud brash and in your face. Never could drive it over %50. Too much car for the suburbs.
2006 Dodge Magnum SRT-8 <- a waste since it was an auto. Gah 13mpg!
2008 Mazda CX-7 <- fun to drive, but still hauls alot of stuff. Turbo'd too. Wife's current car, but doesn't suck my soul to drive it.

I responded before, but just listed my previous car... here's my history:
1971 VW Super Beetle. My college car, bought used in '75 - loved it.
1978 VW Rabbit. My first new car; got it shortly after college graduation. Great fun, and dead simple compared to the recent ones.
1982 Honda Accord. Plusher than the Rabbit, very civilized, got great mileage. Not a lot of power, but otherwise a very pleasurable drive. Still one of the nicer-looking Accords, in my opinion.
1986 Honda Civic Si. Great little red hatchback. I installed an aftermarket exhaust, and it sounded as nice as it looked.
1988 Dodge Raider (Mitsubishi Montero). Bought used from my Dad, as he and Mom had moved, sold a boat, and didn't need to tow anything anymore. It was a change of pace, and I couldn't pass it up at the price. Drove it for 8 years.
1998 VW GTI VR6. Lovely, and lively, bit of Teutonic hot hatch. Great fun, creamy delivery from the 6, and I drove it for nearly 12 years.
And lastly - 2010 MINI Cooper S. My first MINI, but not my first British car...
1978 MG Midget, owned as a second car since 1995. My mechanical pet, hobby, dry-weather driver, show car, etc. Great little classic!

Condor27596, I've always wanted a 1st gen CRX. When they came out I was an undergrad and couldn't even think about buying a new car, and after that there was always something else to get my attention. Like this MINI that's on order. (-:
Cars that didn't get away, in order of acquisition:
1978 Civic 1200, brown
1984 Honda Interceptor 700 motorcycle, red and white
1968 Mini Cooper 1275 S, blue w/ Union Jack on roof
1980 Scirocco, white
1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX, blue
1991 Kawasaki ZX-11, black/purple
1996 Kawasaki ZX-11, wine red
1992 Acura Integra, blue - wife's car when we got married
1998 BMW M3, Estoril Blue - selling for MINI
1985 Ford E-350 Econoline Van, diesel, silver
2002 Subaru Impreza WRX, WRC Blue - selling for MINI
2005 Lotus Elise, Chrome Orange - keeping
2004 Honda Odyssey, some boring color that I forgot - keeping.
2002 BMW M Coupe, Laguna Seca Blue - keeping
Update 6/22: Added the classic Mini Cooper. How could I have forgotten that one?

1982 VW Rabbit (diesel), eventually transplanted a turboed Jetta engine into that (high school)
1974 Chevy Nova, bored 454, Competition Cam, TRW domed forged pistons, Yellow Jacket mufflers (high school/college)
2000 Jeep Wrangler SE (post-college)
2006 Harley-Davidson Sportster (1200 Low)
Still have the Sportster, building a 1999 XLH chopper in the garage, and have had the '09 MCS since November 2008.

I just moved from a 1998 BMW 328i Auto (E36) to a 2009 MCS (Pepper White, Blakc Roof) manual and have never been happier... been wanting a mini since 2007 when a dealer convinced me to take one for a drive, and finally got it the moment I found what I was looking for
I sold a '97 Subaru Outback. Not a single rattle or problem in 146,000 miles with that car, aside from the head cracking at 140,000! I have much more fun in my new MINI S, which I bought in 2010 and has 18k miles on it -- but the car is much more of a piece of junk than the Subaru. I miss the solidity, quality, and reliability of the Subaru; but the MINI is much more fun/enjoyable to drive.
MINIs are waaaay too expensive for the poor quality that you get, but damn are they fun to drive.

Traded in for our 2010 Mayfair:
2001 VW Jetta Wagon (hubby's car... I hated that car.)
2003 VW GTI 20th Anniversary #3700 of 4000 (My car... I wish I could have kept it!)
Went to a one car household, so both cars had to go!

Although I don't miss the wagon whenever we jump into our Mayfair!
