I'm new to Mini's and I just bought a 2009 Cooper S. On the engine it has a John Cooper Works Tuning Kit plaque with a JCW intake on the car. Is there any way I can run the kit serial number and see what parts were part of the kit? I was under the impression that the kit's usually have new mufflers as well but mine appears to be stock.
Any help would be appreciated.
The # on the plaque is "R56S04974"
The kit should have included a new air cleaner and filter, ECU software updated and new mufflers with JCW exhaust tips. Maybe someone didn't want the increased exhaust noise, so they didn't change the exhaust.
Mine doesn't pop or burgle, that came out on the later models. You will prolly have to take it to the dealer so see if the ecu software is up to date for the tuning kit. The kit will add about 20hp over the stock S output. You should get a good dose of perma-grin every time you step on the gas though!
JCW kit is standard with the following...
JCW air intake box
2 Mufflers (same part# as cooper s, with JCW tips)
Resonator delete pipe
Engine badge
Grill badge
Rear door badge
Engine tune
The exhaust sound comes from the resonator delete pipe.

Wait a minute.... I understand the resonator delete is responsible for most of the sound increase, but are you telling me that the JCW muffler and the stock MCS muffler are internally the same? Just different tips?

The tuning kit mufflers on the Clubman do have different part numbers, but they look identical to the original mufflers. I also think they are the same and all of the sound comes from the resonator delete.
the difference in how the car performed after I had my kit installed was pretty obvious, especially when I am in 3rd/4th gear. My 2010MCS had seemed to be a little... boggy before the change. Afterwards, it felt like I had power right away, even if I didn't have a lot of revs on the engine. Of course, some of this is probably my mental wishing after dropping $2500 on the kit, but...
