What I find interesting reading this thread is the fact that no one has commented on the real problem. 3, 4,6 and 8 cylinder 4 cycle engines are just a bad idea right out of the gate. They have spent years improving the bad idea. They make the bad idea more fuel recipient. They make the bad idea less polluting. The bad idea is now so complicated it is not only a nod to human persistence but a nod to human stupidity. IMHO.
I had a 69 mustang and when I took it to the shop the mechanic used to fight to see who was going to work on it. That car was reliable, fast, light and IMO we should have put our energies into a new type of engine back then...but that is not the way large companies (including BMW) roll.

So it's been four years since I posted. Wow how time flies! Well, I did nothing with the MINI since but finally I decided to make it my daily driver. The car is now 17 years old and still has a little over 4000 miles. I changed the oil, washed and waxed it. Will need new tires, time and weather dried them out.
I noticed the AC is not cooling well enough. Probably needs a recharge.
Can I just get a can of coolant gas from Pepboys? Will it be OK to recharge a 2003 car?
Thanks.
I'm sure I'll have more questions soon

If It has been a while I would replace the valve cover just because. Ebay has some quality covers for around $50.00 I did some research (NAM) for my car and went with the Ebay special and it is just fine.
Plus replacing the valve cover is such a small effort almost anyone can do it. If you have extended miles and it's not been replaced....replace it IMO.
