SO CONFUSED (Auto Wipers)

OK so I have an 07 MCS (build date: 02/07), It has the Rain Sensing wipers, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how they work.. How do I turn the system on, off, or adjust the sensitivity. I can't find the sensitivity adjustment option in the customization menu, but I do have a button on the tip of the wiper stalk with the windshield wiper symbol and an A on it. I'm confused because the manual I downloaded from MiniUSA makes NO mention of this button... (Car didn't come with an actual print manual.)

the right side stack has a button at the end that you press inward to turn on and off.

Start the engine and press the end of the right stalk the wipers should wipe the window one time. they are no on. press the button again and they are turned off.

the car has to be on for the setting to show up in the menu system and it will look like a windshield with a wiper on it.

cannot find the little windshield with a wiper icon in the menu, with car on or off.... Maybe the '07s cannot have the sensitivity adjusted...

Start car, leave it in neutral or park.
Press the BC button (stalk on left of column)
Keep pressing until Set/Info appears.
Press through until you see a icon of what looks like a windshield with an A on it and a line through it (that's the wiper).
You press it again (I think) and you should see a gauge with Min and Max setting.
Press the button on the stalk to whatever sensitivity you want.
I leave mine on min.

Much easier to do than explain. Sorry if not real clear.

If you do a google on 'how to set wiper sensitivity on 2007 mini cooper' I did find a video out there from Bentley explaning it.

OK. Now I'm confused with ya. Mine has it so why doesn't yours? Are you sure yours has the auto sensitive rain wipers?

I'm pretty sure, I mean it has the sensor on the windshield behind the rearview mirror, AND the button with the picture of the Windshield/Wiper, & the "A" on the right stalk....

I'm stumped. Like I said I can run my stalk and it comes up. Maybe when you're by the dealership, have them look at it. Shouldn't charge you.
Have a sales guy look at it.

It should look like this from the outside. Disregard the white in the picture. But there should be a clear area with the led and light sensor.

He's talking about adjusting the sensitivity. Mine is the same, 1 pull downward and the wipers work once and 1 up and they remain on and will continue working until I stop at a light (if barely rainly) they'll slow way down or even momentarily stop. Then start up again once I move.
What the OP is talking about is setting the sensitivity which is down via the left stalk and the set/info button. OP says it doesn't display on his.
I can't figure that out.

Just for the heck of it, I went out and ran mine through again and it's there. I saw your video and was wondering if the car was running when you did this? I didn't try it with car not running but maybe that's the issue. Try running through your set/info stuff with the car running.

Let us know.

I've tried it with it running, with it off, with the wipers on and the wipers off. Plan on taking it to the dealer shortly for the recall... Will just ask them and see what they say...

What's wrong with you guys???? Just kiddin. Please let me know what you find out. I'm really curious to the outcome. Maybe just because you have the thing on the window it doesn't mean you have the rain sensitive wipers???? Only thing I can think of. The manual doesn't tell you much and it doesn't show you how to adjust it either.

To both of you guys. Rudeboim3 and Sanduneboi. When it's raining, and you have your wipers in the up position (stalk) and first position. I assume the wipers work. So, if it's barely raining, when you come to a stop do your wipers slow way down or even stop temporarily until you start moving again and then speed up?

Yup, mine has that also. I just can't figure out why you can't get to the adjustment via the left stalk using the set/info display. Really weird.
Now, if I push the little buttom on the right stalk the wiper moves once. The same that it does if I just pull down once on the stalk so I don't really get what that button is for.
Oh, my build date is 10/20/07. FYI

Oh, my build date is 10/20/07. FYI
Here are the settign available from the right stalk

From off Up 1 - Wipers on Normal Speed. (they will only slow or stop if you have automatic wipers), when in this mode 1 down turn this mode off

From off Up 2 or from From Normal Speed Up 1 - Wipers on High Speed. (again will slow or stop in you have auto wipers) when in this mode 1 down sets it back to normal speed a second down will turn of the wipers.

From off Down 1 - Single Wiper Sweep, then they stop and will not wipe again until you go Down 1 or Up 1/2

Press end of stalk - Wipers will Wipe once and are in the Auto mode and will wipe every X seconds depending on the setting in the set info area.

Pressing the end of the stalk a second time turns off the Auto Wipe. Also any Up action of the stalk will aslo turn off Automatic Mode and put it in the Normal or High speed modes. Turning those off from does "not" return it to automatic.

The only thing i can think of is that the programing in the car is older and does not have a time adjustment, just a preset timing for the auto wipers.

Unfortunately the only real way to test this is on a rainy day. Praying water on the car while it is running and the wipers are set to auto does not really work well as there is "to much" water for the system to handle. But you can try it and see if you can get a nice mist on the window with a hose.

^^^Schatzy62 - after much reading and digging I think you hit it. I believe OP Sanduneboi has the auto wipers but they are factory set that's why he can't pull up the icon from the set/info display whereas I can.

Oh, and thanks for clearing up the button on the end of the stalk. Now I know how that works. Duh!
The manuals leave a lot to be desired. LOL

I know during the 2007 model year there were a number of software changes. that can be very confusing to when working on them. I think this may have been one of them

Not a problem i have had a number of BMWs that have all been slightly different on the "auto wipers" activation some even more stange than the MINI's
