2012 MSC stalling...overheating?

My MCS has been acting odd the past day or two. Sometimes, when I go to start my car (6spd), then car will idle surge a bit and stall. With the clutch pushed in, I can rev the engine a little and it'll still stall. With the clutch out and the car in neutral, it'll rev lazily and not stall, and it'll be a little boggy when I drive it off. It normals out in a few minutes once it's moving.

I was driving to work last night (I work 3rd shift) on the highway and after about 20 minnutes of driving, the red 'overheat' light came on for a second, followed by the yellow 'overheat' light for about 5 more seconds. Then the light would turn off. It did this twice, and I pulled over and shut the car off for 5 minutes. I did not open the hood because I don't have a flashlight (stupid, I know), nothing smelled unusual, the car wasn't acting any different, and the owner's manual said "Don't open the hood!" It did not do it again for the rest of my 53 mile commute. I have not checked the coolant level yet because it was dark and my work's parking lot is not lit well. I'm just going to look at it before I leave in the morning.

Oil is good...I just checked it this morning. 5500 miles on the car.

The temperatures have been around 30-35* at night and 45-55* during the day.

I'm going to call the dealer Monday. Could it be a bad sensor or something more serious?

Could be as something simple as a bad coolant temperature sensor...
But it could also be a thermostat or water pump issue.

Since the Countryman has the same engine, this could very much hold true as the electronic thermostat has been a small area of concern.

danigurrl, definitely let the dealer handle the issue as you're the warranty holder.
Report back on what you find out.

I scheduled an appointment on Saturday to fix the problem. I'll report back what the dealer says.

Jack is at the dealership now. He'll be getting fixed on Monday. In the mean time, I'm driving this loaner:

Sounds exactly the same as mine: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...o-service.html wonder if this is a 2012 issue.

Yup...that's what happened to mine. I got Jack back. I'm thinking of renaming him Eklipse instead...which is the German spelling of Eclipse....since I now call it "My German DSM."

I think Jack runs way better now though. I wonder if the sensor was always defective...and it just took 6k miles to crap out. I swear Jack has more pick-up than before! Inskip Mini took good care of him...they even gave him a nice wash before I picked him up!

Glad you got Jack back. That color on the loaner is not my favorite.

If the thermostat was in fact not working properly and allowing the engine to heat up too much, that could have caused a lose of power due to heat soak.
That would explain why it seems to have more pep now. Just a thought.
