Wind Screen... is there a max speed

Anyone know if there is a maximum speed that the windscreen can handle? I was driving "a little fast" in my wife' cabrio today and decided not to take a $300 risk so I just pushed the top back....

It woud be nice to know the max speed for future reference.

Hmmm... Good question. Haven't seen any "official" data or docs on that. Mine seems like it latches in there pretty darn securely. I don't think it would come out at anything less than Warp Factor 3. Now mine doesn't take much of a push to snap the top back to the flat position, so maybe you could generate enough force to do that at Warp 2. Though it seems that the turbulence back there with the deflector in seems to swirl more than just push straight back.

The way the thing's built and the way the latches work - I'll never go fast enough to make it come out.... not that I would EVER exceed the legal limit...on the autobahn...

Mine has never come out, but it has laid down. It was really windy and it was coming from the side so there was a lot of turbulence. I had trouble keeping the windscreen standing. I've used it at interstate speeds (+/- 80 mph) with out any problems.

I'm guessing it's gonna get torn to shreds at about 770 mph.

I would think in today's litigious society, if there were a MAX speed they would have put it in BIG BOLD LETTERS in the instructions

What instructios?

I know it can handle triple digit speeds... shhhhhhhh I looked in the rearview and noticed it was rocking front to back a little on the joint... i pushed it flat.

I just wondered how the screen and plastic would hold up to consistent high speeds....

The force of the wind on the screen is from the back to the front, not front to back. I can't image you can get a wind force blowing forward hard enough to dislodge it, and if you did, it would hit you in the back of the head.

really dumb question here but how the heck do you fold the windscreen back up so it will fit in the case? I took mine out the other day and cant seem to figure out how it folds down to the size it needs to be.

LOLOL

The only reason I am laughing is that I had the same problem. When you take the unit out of the car the side that clicks in when unfolded... just pull back on the latch and it will retract the bar enough to free up the side... does that explanation wok? Sorry I am coming off a 12 hour shift and a little groggy

Look for the end with the Phillips head screw, then flip it over to the other end. Retract the front holder and then lift the back out a tad and continue to retract the holder. That should cause the screen to fold. The rest is obvious. Its the Phillips head screw that is the key to remembering which end to pop out.

If it's a dumb question, then I'm a dumb person - it took me a half hour to find the magic combination to fold it down....

Definitely not a dumb question - took me several minutes to figure out, and I'm a freakin' genius...

WOW I just realized that y'all are talking abotut eh wind deflector, all the while I was thinking this was about the windshield as its a British car it would be no different than using bonnet in place of hood.

The visual of the windscreen(windshield) popingout forward, flipping up and strikling the driver in the head caught me as weird. And quite scary.

The secret is where the vertical and horizontal parts of the screen hinge together - look at the "hinges" at each end (from the end with the screen removed from the car) - one end has a screw in the "hinge pin", the other does not. On the end that does NOT have the screw, the hinge pin actually retracts into the frame to allow the halves of the screen to separate. The mechanism is activated using the same handle that retracts the long front pin on that side that holds the screen in the car. Once that pin is retracted all the way into the screen, pull the handle away from the screen and slide it in some more - this retracts the little pin that holds the hinge together and it will just kinda fall apart...

Hope that helps.

I am a project manager for a construction company and this windsceen folding trick has totally escaped me. I have had mine for over a year and never figured out how to fold the damned thing up to put it back in the bag. I gave up long ago and learned to deal with it being full sized.

I just traded my 05 MCSca and sold the screen to a Sunshine MINI's member. I have to ship it and finally had to find out how to fold it up so I can get it in a shipping box. I sat at my desk yesterday for over an hour with the screen in front of me trying to figure it out and finally gave up in frustration. I feel like a total idiot now.

One of the latch handles has TWO arrows on it. Pull this one back toward the center of the windscreen (the same direction it slides to remove the screen from the car) while lifting up on the inside end of it - it will move in some more against spring pressure, and this will retract the pin holding the hinge on that side. Then the whole thing just kinda flops apart in your hands. Give it another try exactly like this...
