Tach Red-line Questions

Saw this demo on Google Video - was labeled "home made shift light" but I can't figure out what the varying "red line indicators" are intended to show. The driver seems to be stationary in a parking lot just blipping the engine.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...cooper&pl=true

This leads me to another question - the illuminated red line on my tach seems to have a lot of other potentially illuminated points as well at lower REMs than the illuminated ones (that are always dark). Do these light up under certain circumstances and when? I have never been deep into the red line but have never seen the dark ones light up. Another mystery feature?

I saw this too, and although it looks cool, I can't figure out what the functionality is supposed to be... ??

what is the redline for an 04 MCS? also, do the "lines" light up as you pass them? I usually shift around 6,700 cause I dont want to ping it off the rev limiter and have never seen them light up. but the actual red line starts a 7k on mine. is there enough acceleration that high to constitute staying in gear that long, or just shift?

I guess no one really know. I read the red line was at 7,500 but that seems a little high. But Id still like to know why the "lines" prior to 7,000 rpm's isnt lit up, and when do they light up?

Well if you were to lok around the Electrical Modifications forum, you would find a few threads that covered this, its a shift light, fill the dark spots and its time to shift. Redline stock varies between models. BUt appperently just after 8k rpm you'll float the valves; atleast thats what I've heard.

For those of you with quicker rev'ing cars, be aware that the RPM indicated on the stock guage will lag behind the actual RPM the motor is turning.

I installed an eShift light on my car to help me out.

This is pure speculation, but the lines might have been for a feature that is available on some BMWs (the variable redline) that might not have made it to production. The parts contract (for the variable redline tach) was let and the suppliers are delivering, but the software programming was never completed. The variable redline concept is available on at least the X5 4.8is and the M3 - basically, as the engine temperature rises as the engine warms up, the redline gets higher. The variable redline is indicated by lighted bars on the tach that extinguish as the engine warms up. On the M3 with SMG, the variable redline is factored into the shifting logic of the SMG software.

isn't redline on a stock mcs 6750? and isn't that electronically limited (ie, electronic throttle pull-back at that point?)

I guess we need to find the guy and ask what he did or what software he has to do something like that. On our cars, they should have just painted the lines red like most cars do. Or why not have them light up as you get really close, but might be a bit of a distraction. My $0.02 worth.
