2007 mini cooper first steering wheel lock problem now not starting

So my car had been working
perfectly, until 2 days ago when I could not get it started. A simple jump start fixed that, however it led to a symbol that looks like a steering wheel with a padlock in red. The owners manual said that is was a electric steering wheel lock malfunction. It also says the car will not start if this symbol comes up. The car actually did start, but the light remained on, so I could not see my speed in the control panel. However it seemed to drive fine. But the battery keeps losing charge and full out dieing. So I couldn't start it and only the warning symbol came up on the tach, nothing else. My dad tried to unplug the battery and charge it and now when you plug the fob in the windshield wipers turn on and you cant stop them, the car dings and no other controls/lights/time/tach displays show. It wont let me press any buttons except operate the radio. How am I going to fix this? What could be wrong?

Could be something as simple as a marginal battery. If it's more than 3 years old, I'd go ahead and replace it as you're close to EOL..

I'd test the battery. They can cause all sorts of weird electrical issues. Here is a thread on NAM about the issue that may provide some very good insight about it. Some were able to just clear the default while others had water in certain areas of the system and the last comment points to low voltage in the battery. So, to my previous comment, I'd start there and test it. If it's low or the battery is pretty old, replace the it and see if that resolves the issue. If not, it may be best to take it in and see what they find.

+1 check the battery.

The other issues are the steering wheel lock here:

But also the lock itself or the wires at the ESPH, which after the battery rules out I would look there.

Thanks
