I got a quote for $400 for a 1 inch scratch I did myself. I was putting my key in instead of using the clicky thing for whatever reason and another of my keys scratched when I turned the key. So yeah, painting costs a lot of money.

I think $250-$350/door would be reasonable at a reputable shop.
dang $400 for a 1inch scratch?
smart that you fixed it yourself.
A long scratch down the side of the car would be hard to fix with
touch up but a 1" scratch you can just fill it with touch up
(many layers) and wetsand it to where it would be undetectable.
Aftermarket paint will never perfectly match the factory paint
(well, in my eyes) nor is durable to swirls...that would be the
primary reason why I would not want to get the entire door
painted for a small scratch like that.
<= oh? a new face.

$400.00 for 1" scratch? that's a lot of money. I would go $250-300.00 per panel which is fair, keep one thing in mind, longer it stays in shop better the job, so if you have another ride, just find a place which works on import cars (european), negotiate your price and then leave the car and the body shop alone. In opposite, you might pay more, and get the job done in a shorter term. Trust me, it never fails with body shops, you pick the poison. But like Ken said, $250-300.00 is more than enough for what you described.
Good Luck

MAN! UNBELIEVEABLE!! I really CANNOT understand why a person would do this. I mean, from my perspective. Yes yes, jealousy, stupidy, boredom, etc. But this is so rediculous. Where was the car when it happened?
This is why I chose Chili Red, so that it would be easier to touch-up/repair in this kind of event...

I posted a couple of weeks ago about our brand new mini getting keyed from the driver's side door back...
...they came back and finished the job friday night. Now we have key scratches from jut behind the headlight all the way back on the driver's side.
I'm pretty pissed...wish there was something I could do about it but sadly this is one of those crimes where nothing can be done.
Oh, and both times the car was parked in front of our place, under a streetlight. I think I am going to park it with the passenger side facing out while I sit in our other car (Buick Regal w/tinted windows) and wait...
I guess I have to find a body shop that will fix this. Thank Goodness for insurance.

Donna
sorry to hear about everyones troubles.
mine just got keyed this past weekend also ... not so bad ... one 12" lenght on half the hood ... and from headlight to under the drivers side mirror ... that one is pretty light ...
well, there was some other stuff that needed to be fixed on the body, so off to the body shop it will go.
just curious, what is this "wet sanding" and touch up everyone is talking about? and how good is it?

I'll be repairing my wife's 1month old black legacy wagon over the weekend which got keyed last weekend. it's on the rear door, about 16" long.
If it wasn't 20F out this week i would've worked on it sooner.
will take before and after shots. the "after" will need to come next
week as I need to let the enamel dry completely before wet sanding it...and the cold temps outside will not help.
will be using an ir heating lamp.

I worked on the rear driver side door this morning. here is the keyed
door in the worst angle, meaning the angle which the scratch is
most visible.

Here is the after in the most detectable angle. From a normal angle
you won't be able to find it unless you were really looking for the
scratch.

I used generic black enamel paint, masking tape, 1500grit sanding
block, ScratchX. To apply the paint, I used a yogurt cup and a
swab, heated the panel with a heat gun (wasn't as cold this morning
as I thought). 5 swipes and the crevice was filled. wetsanded it
down until flat, polished it, and waxed afterwards.

OMG if someone did that to Athena i think i would get me a whupemup stick and lurk until they came back. it would defiantely be worth it. NOBODY touchs Athena unless she says so
To me, keyed or dinged, both is just as bad as they are both preventable
if people are more careful. but dings are easier to fix.
