3rd brake light on all the time

Hi mini owners. My 3rd brake light stays on. I was able to pull fuse 20. That put it out but it’s the fuse for the fuel pump as well. So…

maybe (probably) related. Got some water (less then a gallon) in the left side floor board in a rain storm just before I noticed this issue.

Looking for ideas on how to troubleshoot this from here

found this tread (below)

seems to be related to the water and a diode under the bcm. going to open up the carpet and have a look and try and dry everything. will report back

Removed the seat.

Removed the panel on the side of the door sill. That’s held in by one large torx bolt in the back holding the seat belt down. After that it pulls straight out towards the middle of interior, has clips.

Propped the carpet up with some small wood pieces I had around.

Put fan on it.

I noticed one evening this past winter that my 3rd brake light was on with my foot off the brake pedal when my headlights were on. Further investigation found my right brake light bulb was out. When I replaced that bulb, the 3rd brake light started working properly.

Got everything dried out and back together. No more issue with the third brake light on for now.

I'm going to check the other brake lights and see if they are good.

Out of curiosity, did the water get into your car because you left a window down or sunroof open? Or do you have a leak? On my first R53, my sunroof drains were clogged, and any time the car saw rain, I'd end up with water inside the car. They were fairly easy to unplug, if you've got a sunroof I'd advise at least checking them. Cheap and easy insurance against having to deal with this again or even the potential for worse damage.

this was high ground water near the curb on the street…

no sun roof on mine but I have seen many complain about the sunroof drains so point well taken

Mine was the A/C Drain the drains under the car was clogged (somewhat common I guess). So, with the A/C on it would eventually fill the passenger Foot/Seatwell and even went into the back seat section. Took 3x to get it fixed. It was a PAIN but, hasn't been a problem in over 3 years and I do run the A/C occasionally. No sunroof either.
