Hi,

I've had water coming into my R50 Cooper. I've noticed that as the car didn't start anymore. The ADAC (German AAA) made some diagnosis and found that the theft lock is engaged and probably the BC1 died.

I dried the car out and after a week it startet again.

But now:
The AC Unit stopped working, the whole air unit is just dark.
The Navigation System does not work anymore. It's stuck at the loading screen. And if it turns on, very rarely with running motor its frozen on the on board computer page.
All windows work.
The Car wont lock, even with its original BC1, it just locks and opens back up.
The Radio works spontaneously, sometimes it says locked but then suddenly it starts to work
The headlights and blinkers work on the outside, but I don't see the turn signal on the dash. The dash is dark and not illuminated when the light is turned on. Also the blinker sound is not there.

I have a replacement BC1 that I've put in, but this one brings up exactly the same features.

Then I measured the resistance between the K-Line on the X10116 and ground. As soon as I turn the ignition on the resistance drops to 0 Ohm, as I turn the car off, it slowly rises back up. There seems to be a short on one of the units. But how can I diagnose wich one, without pulling the car apart.
I can't read out any of the control units, except for engine and steering.

Hope you've got some Ideas for me.

 

is there still water in the carpet? There is a harness on the drivers side that is known to act up when its wet, if let go long enough it'll will rot and fail, typical issue with sunroof cars as the drain line is right above it and the rubber line pops off or rots

 

Yes it has a sunroof and that's probably where the water came in.
The carpet is all dried out. Where's that wiring harness located?

the carpet sits on top of a foam pad, it might all still have water in there, the harness has a connector that may be laying in the water or corroded

 

Nav drive is under the passenger seat, and it's likely flooded. The Nav is useless anyway.

 

The BCM and harness often get water damage from leaking sunroof drains. There are 4 drains for the sunroof which drain below the car for the fronts, and at the top corners of the hatch jambs for the rears. It’s usually recommended to use hose clamps or zip ties to secure the drain tubes after re-attaching the hoses.

I’ve removed also the panel on the drivers side. There’s a ton of cables but I have no clue wich ones belong to the k-bus.
Is it possible that the used replacement BC1 is broken as well? But shouldn’t the other units respond? Or do I need a working BC1 to be able to read out those? I’ve also tried a vehicle test with the BC1 removed. It shows the exact same result as with it connected.
Interior lights and windows work perfectly fine with both BC1

 

Reattach w zip ties.

You seem to have a bit more water issues then I’ve had but I feel your pain. I’d use contact cleaner on the connectors of the bc1 and inspect the pins for oxidation(green) and any rotted away I lost my sunroof and locks this way. I’m in NY been buying cheap BC units on eBay from EU area some have the plugs and wires attached that may be your next step replace a few of the bottom ones my guess as they are most in the water and rotted pins.


I’d spray WD40 or Silicone on the lock actuators outside door latches to clean and free free them up, I found a little dust and dirt impeded smooth unlocking at times. Also good to unplug the battery for a few minutes to reset some settings. Good luck!

 

The sunroof is still perfectly connected and dry, the rain came in at several positions of the door seal. I've attached the seal with a special elastic seal material and it's tight now.
I also found the "bad boy" in the K-Bus line. It's the EWS module. Ive unplugged the connectors on the X10116 trying out when it starts working again. And the EWS did the trick. interestingly, other than that the computer now can't read out the status of the module nothing else happened. Everything else works again and no fault codes are stored regarding the missing k-line wire. So it's just the EWS module that transmits a bad signal on the K-Bus and disables all K-Bus communication. The Module itself seems to work, cause I can lock and drive the car just normally. As it's a 18 year old car, I won't mess with that and just leave the wire lose.

 

There is the module on the right fender well. In front of the door jam, that gets water in its connectors. Keep an eye on that as well.
