Looking for help

I am new to Mini Coopers. I picked up a 2006 with 122000 miles ( well the wife bought it at an auction) Someone obviously took care of it, it's pretty clean. But the main issue is it won't upshift.

I have a Autel DS708, went into the system & found a Radio code, and that was about it. Did a self test & everything passed. There is a adaption section in the tool, but a guy on the Autel Forum, used that & now his car won't start.

I downloaded the INPA software from the NAM thread, purchased the obd cable that was listed (amazon $22). But, I can't find the trans adaption section in the software.

Is there any INPA experts in the Orange County area of So Cal that can help?

Thanks,
NT

if you have an INPA working, look on video, can do CVT adaptation by your self.

Thanks to adriancl for youtube link!, I found my mistake in trying to locate the correct path in the software.

So this morning, since the streets are pretty empty, I tried the adaption reset. it took 3 tries to get the "X" to erase, but I got it.

So, the car still is stuck in low (1st). Anyone have any insight on the problem in the transmission?

Thanks,

NT

Is it an S or base model? Only the base model uses a CVT auto transmission. The auto transmission in the S is a traditional torque converter made by Aisin.

Just to be clear, this is an R50 with the CVT and not an R53 with the 6 speed Aisin slushbox, right? The CVTs are notoriously unreliable. I seem to recall several people with a similar issue either swapping to a 6 speed manual or a rebuilt CVT.

You can try one more thing.Put the stick in D , and drive the car in first gear to 6500rpm, and than pull off from acceleration pedal and let car brake by engine until it almost stop.Maybe this procedure will help you.Must be done only after all adaptation for gearbox are made.
If not work, please try to post here fault codes.

Yes, R50 with CVT.

Not sure if this means anything.... It took 3 try's to get the "x" to erase. 6500 rpm, I was close to it, car seemed like it was against the rev limiter. Should I do the whole process again, or just try the D to 6500 rpm and see what happens?

Thanks,
NT

Do you have fault codes on gearbox module?

When I went into the "Engine" tab, no error codes. When I go into the "Transmission", "Aisin" is the only choice. an error box comes up "no communication"

Thanks,

I doubt that INPA will be helpful. CVT failure is common and there is a lot of information online:
https://www.google.com/search?q=mini...t+not+shifting
On this forum, start by looking at these threads (many others if you search):

R50 Cooper have CVT transmission made by ZF Germany, not AISIN made in Japan.

That's what I though, but when I choose "transmission" in INPA, Aisin is the only option.

Thanks,
NT

Thanks rkw, for the links.
So after more reading, I decided to check the battery again, It is a Walmart Maxx and is only 2 years old. let it sit over night, & my Solar brand battery tester indicated that it was not holding the cca, (it is a 650 cca battery, but only had 400 cca after sitting overnight) Walmart gave me a free replacement battery. had 670 cca after sitting over night.
so this morning I drove the MC around the block, it seemed to up shift so to speak. it was at 3000 rpm at 55 mph. not sure if that was normal. Tried the sport mode, from a stop, and the indicator only showed 2, but it upshifted from there.
Within my reading, the speed sensor seemed to cause issues, I ordered one from Amazon, should be here today. I guess I need to search out a replacement procedure?

Thanks,

NT
