Crank Pulley

I messed up the threads on the crankshaft pulling the pulley off. Am I screwed or can I tap the damaged threads?

Not much to see in the picture and you aren't giving much information. Hard to help you. I can tell you that I messed up when I was replacing my crank pulley by not using the bottom bolt that threads into the crankshaft snout and makes a backing for the puller bolt to press against. I just used the bolt that goes through the puller, which isn't pitched for the crankshaft. I was worried I had messed up the threads in the crankshaft, but the new bolt threaded in fine once I got the pulley off.

Pretty hardened steel on that crankshaft and I would think you can retap it. You should also change that oil seal while you're at it. ModMini has a video showing how to thread a screw into the rubber that pops the seal right off.

How bad is “messed up?” If you can find a good tap of the correct thread size you might be able to clean it up enough to get the bolt in. The dampers are a tight press fit and the bolt primarily keeps the pulley from backing off the crank. If you use thread locker on the bolt, as you should, I would think you would be good to go. What should be done when removing the damper is to place an unthreaded rod into the crank snout that the puller bolt pushes against.

sorry, the pulley bolt is a different thread than the puller bolt and I forgot to put the flat top puller bolt into the crank thread before bolting the puller on so I screwed up the threads when I attempted to pull it off with impact gun. Totally my fault, just a brain fart.

Wow. This thread started out one way and ended up another. How does it happen that the first posts end up at the bottom of the thread?

I borrowed my buddies snap-on tab and die set and was able to clean the threads up.

I know a quote when I see one. Originally I had posted the first reply. Doesn’t matter, just strange.
