Since OP has ONE post, let me explain .....

what ECS is saying is that altho this is a programmable option on a GEN1 car

it is not owner programmable as it is on later cars

for a GEN1 it must be done via a computer with special software
typically a dealer will charge an hour of labor for this 10 minute job ....

"NCS Expert" software can do the job and some GOOD independent MINI shops have this ..... some individuals tooo if you get real lucky.

************
there was a long list of programmable options on a GEN1 like the daytime RL's and how the automatic locks worked and some other stuff, but they could only be set by the dealer. When I bought my 02-S the dealer offered one free reprogramming for changes after I'd 'absorbed the car' for a bit. Later any changes cost over $100 . . .

On the GEN2 car, all these options could be changed by the owner via the buttons on the steering wheel stalk and the 'on board computer display' in the tach.

If you're technically inclined (in the IT sense) you can buy a $25 cable from Amazon and download the "NCS Expert" software for free here or on various BMW forums. With the $25 cable you will need short two of the pins together (7-8), which only takes 2 minutes with a soldering iron.

This setup will let you program the dealer options, including the DRLs and many other options. I set this up recently and it took <1hr to get everything going, but if you're not a computer person then it could take longer.

Thanks for the replies, I'm fairly technicalogically savvy (spelling is not one of my strengths) I used to build my own computers but now we all use phones so that skill is slipping away.. do 100% of my own maintenance on my vehicles, except changing/balancing tires. So I like to figure things out on my own, however learning from forums can be frustrating at best when 50% of the comments are off topic.

Is there a USB cable you can buy that doesn't need to be soldered? I thought I read there were some with a switch on it that shorted out the pins without soldering?

Thanks, i guess I should have done a formal intro but I'm more of just a hack that fumbles around until it gets figured out. ...sorry to disappoint.

BFFs or rivals?

An over saturated Hot Orange day

Needs some under bonnet detail.

From: In the here and now, for now.
Three things I notice under the bonnet that need taken care of very soon. You need strut tower defenders, you need to replace the plastic expansion tank with stainless and you really, really need to replace the dip stick.
Check the towers for mushrooming before installing the plates.
The plastic tank has a bad habit of splitting at the seam after a while.
You don't want to know the trouble if that dip stick breaks off inside the block and they do break. My main wrench got mine out, it was just holding on by a thread broken about in the middle.
Very nice looking cabrio and displayed properly with the ugly canvas hidden away. Topless motoring IS motoring at its best.
