I give up, how do I turn off Daytime Running Lights

I've searched and searched, and I can't find a way to turn off the daytime running lights. I went to the local stealership, and they said that it's expensive and time consuming for the service dept to do.

Is there a way to do it myself or is my only option to have the dealership do it?

thanks!

I would happily pay $40. I was told it's a couple of hours of labor? IONO why they would tell me that.

Depends. I guess that they may be marginally safer in traffic, but I'm not convinced. They are defininitely more noticeable to the local constabulary if I'm (ahem) surveying the local highways to ensure that the proper speed limits have been posted.

They should turn them off just for asking, I'd try calling MINI USA to see if there is any BMW policy on this, or if it's just whatever an individual dealer wants to do. I had several changes done to the programming on my MINI over the first couple of years and was never charged for it.

I like my daytime running lights.

The day time running light feature is controlled thru you ECU... All a tech has to do is...
1. Plug in OBD2 connector into slot under dash
2. Touch body controls on computer screen
3. Enter light module
4. Touch day time running lights
5. Touch disable
6. Unplug
It literally take 2 seconds to do!
Mine were on but luckly the shop i work at has the factory BMW laptop so i did it myself! WOOT!

But $40 is normal and look at all possible features you want activated and get it all done at once... them $40 doesnt seem so bad!

one of the local dealers that supports our club will do any of the reprograming for free... just gotta ask nice and work a bit into their schedule.

are you a member of a local club ? they may have some "connections"

also 1 click up on the E brake and the lights will turn off

I'll have to call in and find out. Because i'm a dealer and was there in person, maybe they didn't want to help me out? I'll call ahead and find out the real skinny.

To me the 25% on of the MINI'S bright lights actually look like daytime running lights rather than, "you forgot to turn off your lights", which is why I like them.

I think they look cool.

If you call around in your local area you can find a competent shop that has the full OBC code reader. Most shops have a service where you just pull in and for a fee (my shop charges $50) they will read and print out everything in the computer. At that time, if you ask, while they are plugging in, they can turn off the DRLs.

You get your DRLs turned off and a full print out which will give you a record of all sorts of stuff you didn't even know was being logged.

Just a suggestion

Really? I've heard that described for DRLs on some cars but have never actually seen it on any car (including my 2006 MCC or previously VW and Honda). The lights going on and off would look pretty odd when driving or parallel parking on San Francisco hills.

How to Turn DTRL On?

Call me old fashioned or just safety conscious, but I like DTRL; they make it much easier for other motorists to see you, even on a sunny day. I have a 2005 MCS with Xenon lights, and I assume the down position on the light stalk (with the "A") is for the DTRL. In this position, my DTRL are only active when the conditions warrant (overcast days, parking garages, etc.). I'd like to change this so that the DTRL are always on when the ignition is on. I'd like to leave my lights in the "A" position all the time and know that the DTRL are on whenever I start the car, and they are off when I shut the car off. Is the sensor to determine when the DTRL accessible so that I can cover it up and fool the system into thinking the DTRL are required? Or is the an OBD programmable function only? Thanks, and be safe out there .........

I used to have the DRL's on my MINI and read in the owners manual that this would turn them off, but it didn't work on my car. I had the car running and slowly pulled on the E brake one click at a time until it was all the way on to see if the lights would go off and they didn't. I have an auto transmission, so maybe that made a difference.

Got the car reprogrammed so they aren't on now.

Yep ...
my friends are impresed that I would flash my lights as I was doing 180 turns.

Your owner's manual tells you about each feature and which ones can be programmed on or off. The manual says "you can have this [feature, function, or ________] activated/deactivated." See sample page below.

Read up, make a list, and get them all done at once.

Here is your manual in PDF format:

I think they should be mandatory on vehicles that blend in to the landscape ie.. silver, gray. I almost always miss these vehicles regardless of how many times I look, but if they are running with lights I almost always see them. It's like motorcycles, they need the lights to be seen day or night. On a side note if there is a Chili Red S white top with no bonnet stripes running in and around I-610/I-10(Houston) ... your tail lights are out.
