Did you know about the driver door lock??

Hi all. I went to get something out of my MINI and I happened to touch the safety lock button (the button on the top rear of the door that you push to manually lock the doors) and I didn’t seem to want to move. So I took a closer look and tried to push it down, it still wouldn’t move. I closed the door and tried it again and it worked fine. Open the door and again the lock was “locked out.” That is cool, you can’t inadvertently lock the driver’s door!! Then I decided to try it on the passenger door, it will lock open or closed.

Just thought I would share this info.

P.S. If someone has already posted about this, sorry for the repeat. I was just so excited that I found something new!!

Yep, so if you're desperate to lock yourself in, you'll have to climb out of the passenger's door! Our BMW and 16 year old Volvo has the same feature. :p

The MINI is the only car I've never locked myself out of They've made it pretty fool proof for dummies like me

yeah, typically you have to open the door handle (inside) and then push down the lock....all my (old) Hondas and Toyotas have had this....so it's a conscious thing.

Me being the QUEEN of locking myself out of my car, I am thankful to have this feature (as did my '97 Civic). My best story was with my Camaro in the 80s. I loaded the groceries into the back of the hatch, threw the keys onto the front seat, and shut the hatch.

So... when I'm in my MINI, with the windows up, the roof closed, engine off and the doors locked... and then I crawl out the back hatch and shut the hatch with my keys in the car... I'M LOCKED OUT!

Well you can have the hatch open, lock the doors with the remote, and throw the keys in the car, close the hatch and lock yourself outBut if you have the plastic wallet key your good to go.Not that anyone would do this more than one time
WannaMini I also did this once,so does that make me KING

Anyone know of a way to disable the "double-open" procedure to open the door from the inside...you know, pull the door release twice to get it to engage. It's supposed to be a safety feature to prevent accidentally opening the door...but come, this is a bit too much, don't you think?

I don't know if you can disable the "double-open" safety feature, but you can have the auto-lock feature turned off.My dealer asked if I wanted it turned on and I said no.I have been in a car whose dash had a fire, and the idea of the electrics frying and not being able to get out in a hurry sort of freaks me out

This is a programmable option. You can opt to open the door with one pull.

I beg to differ. The double pull is a mechanical setup, if you push the “safety lock button” down then you will have to use the double pull, however the “auto lock” (locks after exceeding 10 or 12 mph) can be disabled. I believe this is the feature that tornado is looking for.

It can be "disabled" by unlocking the doors using the 'unlock' toggle.

I haven't tried the lock button - cannot figure out why they still have them if all MINIs have power locks - but I found on our '02 you can lock the driver door when it is open if the window is all the way down.

You guys are all missing the real solution. Have your dealer enable the auto UNlock feature. You turn the car off, the doors unlock - no double-pull required.

And you don't have to have auto lock enabled to have auto unlock enabled - they're separate settings.

I guess I have auto lock disabled all the time, unless I lock the doors with the toggle I can always pull the handle and leap out of the car, moving or not,on one pull of the handle

I used to live in a real safe area and just left the keys in the car. Every time I went someplace and locked the door, yep, you guessed it, the keys were inside. EVERY TIME!! I finally hid a coat hanger under the bumper. I wore out two of them. DOH!!!!
