Mini Cooper R50 oil pressure light on idle

Hello everyone,

Maybe someone knows or had this issue and could help me. The issue is that oil pressure light lights up when car is warm and on idle. If rpm reaches 1+k then light goes off.

I checked the oil pressure mechanically and it goes to 0 bar... so the electrical issues are gone.

This had happen after oil and oil filter change. Before that i drove about 10000 km. without issues. I red some info online and checked the oil filter canister cover and there was center core attached to the inside of the oil filter cap. The core is spring-loaded like this

- so this problem is also gone ..

I took a foto of oil filter holder other part ..

Maybe some pieces are missing?

I know there could be engine problem, but why this happened just after oil/filter change? Can't by coincidence ..

Maybe someone have some advice? Thanks!

Unless your housing differs from mine (I have an r53), it looks like you might be missing the spring that goes on the bypass valve portion of the housing.

I do think that r53 and r50 housing is different. Maybe someone could confirm that?

I believe the canister lids are different, but the housings fit the R50, R52, R53.

As of this link, it says Cooper and Cooper S with automatic Transmission. Do you have an R53 automatic?

I have the 6-speed.

In this thread from 2012 which deals with the exact issue you are having, the OP (an R50 owner) posted a photo of his setup (sans BPV spring), and a second photo at bottom which shows the BPV spring in place.

Unfortunately, there were no responses to his issue.

The housings are different between the Cooper/ Cooper S Automatic and manual S models, as the manual S models have oil coolers that bolt to the oil filter housing and the Coopers do not.

There should still be a bypass spring in there, all systems have one, it is a failsafe to keep oil circulating in the event of filter failure or at max capacity.

You didn't replace the original filter cap with a later one that doesn't use the black core on it did you? That will give you oil pressure issues.

If no one has answered you completely yet...I have had this same issue VERY recently.

1. If you had the plastic cage, you MUST have it! Not having this cage will cause you to have a low oil pressure light at idle.

2. Make sure you are using an OEM filter! I still had the cage in mine and a non-OEM filter and still had the oil light issue. Put in an OEM filter, no more issue.

3. You CANNOT buy a new style filter cap without the cage and use it with your original housing. Mini screwed us on this one! Updated the cap, discontinued making the old cap, new cap requires use with new housing.

Hope this helps. Hopefully you have better luck than me, my plastic cage is broke in places, but it still functions. Currently i'm looking for a replacement with the cage because I don't have the money to replace the entire housing.

This is ALL Correct

Also there is NO such thing as different oil filters for the early cars. ALL 02-06 MINIs use the SAME oil filter. People always claim otherwise, but that's not true.

I changed the oil in my wife's R 50 and installed a Beck Arnley oil filter. Got the low oil pressure light below 1500 rpm's. I replaced the oil pressure sensor which didn't help. Then I replaced the oil filter with a Mann filter (the brand I usually use) and this cleared up the low oil pressure light issue.
