Navi screen blank, what to check?

I bought this '04 and the navigation screen is blank, but the backlighting seems to be on. Nothing happens when I press or turn the **** and there is a nav disc in the drive. What could be the problem?

I have read that a battery that is low or is faulty will cause problems

Well, the car has been sitting a few weeks and I did have to jump start it but once it's running the battery voltage is normal so it shouldn't be a problem then.

If the Nav isn't receiving full voltage while it is starting up, it can go into a state that it won't recover from (even if the voltage rises to normal levels later). Check the condition of the battery.

OK I'll put a charger on the battery for an hour and then try it.

Do you hear the Nav unit spinning up? It's usually pretty audible.

So is the exhaust so I can't tell. The red light on the DVD unit works.

If you turn on accessories but not the engine, the nav unit will spin up without all that obstructing engine noise covering up the sound. It will spin up, and then you should be able to hear the head in the drive moving back and forth while it reads the initial map data.
