R50/53 2005 clutch replacement
2005 clutch replacement
Hello, I am looking for some guidance as I am about to tackle the clutch on a 2005 mini cooper (non s). I want to make sure I have all the necessary parts before I start. Can someone please advise me on which parts are available at what price and which parts are better to use? Everything from clutch to flywheel down to the grease. I need to make a checklist to be sure I have everything! thank you!
i appreciate the link archive but none of these really spell it out for me and most of the posts arent as recent as id like them to be. Someone needs to make a list of components needed when doing a clutch job. Also, what are the most recent recommended clutch/flywheel kits for a 2005 non S car?
also, it looks like valeo makes a clutch kit with a solid flywheel as a cost effective alternative for the S models. will these fit on a non S car? i see them for around 500 dollars for clutch kit + flywheel
There is no complete list
I am in the middle of doing my clutch but I did not make a list.
I doubt anybody else has done a list either.
There are few DIY's that make a complete extensive list before hand.
Basically, take the tranny off the car and then see what you need and then order it online or at the dealer and wait a few days to get it. Basic things like tools and sockets and grease and threadlocker, you will have to source locally if you dont own it already. Impact tools are a must or you will have sore arms for a week, especially if you never took the sub frame off before as the bolts can be siezed and take a lot of effort to remove.
The basics parts to order are a Valeo OEM clutch kit with disc, pressure plate and clutch throwout bearing. (seems to be the system of choice on this board and other boards).
Next items are clutch throwout bearing guide tube (if yours is damaged), crank seal (if yours is leaking), and clutch fork including fork shaft upper&lower bushings and pivot lever and drive pin.
Next item is your flywheel. You will need to remove it and resurface it at a machine shop but if it is damaged beyond resurfacing, you will have to replace it.... (expensive).
You will also need new e-torx bolts for the clutch plate.
You will also need new bolts for the flywheel (not mandatory but recomended).
You may also need clutch master and slave cylinders, shifter cables and some other items depending on what you break or find broken.
So you see, there can never be a complete list unless you have unlimited dollars and buy everything beforehand... and will still miss something.
Good luck with your project. We are here to help if you get stuck or need advise.

Most things listed above except for the flywheel. You can't resurface the dual mass flywheel so it's best to replace it. The Valeo kit includes the flywheel. Go to waymotorworks.com and contact Way. He knows what parts you'll need and he carries them. Even some of the parts not listed on his website like the guide tube.

Does the 2005 model Cooper have the dual mass flywheel? I thought only the "S" and "JCW" models use the dual mass flywheel.
My 2002 Cooper R50 has the regular flywheel, not the dual mass version.
If you do have the dual mass flywheel, Evasive is correct, you cannot resurface. Evasive is also correct that there is a Valeo kit that includes the dual mass flywheel with the disk, plate and release bearing, but it typically lists the "S" model, not the regular version as far as I can tell. Great price too.
