R50/53 make trim black permanently?
make trim black permanently?
I know there are a number of threads about products to return your trim to black, but Im wondering if theres anything that does the job and doesn't have to be reapplied constantly. I have Mother's back to black, which works beautifully for about 4 days to a week, then starts to fade, and within a week or two is back to gray. The dealer waxed it or something, and I can't make it stay black with this stuff.
Is there anything thats a permanent fix, or will I just have to keep reapplying forever?
Thanks!
Melissa

i dont know how I feel about painting the trim. I have to say though that I really thought the other stuff would be more permanent. But then I guess if it was permanent they wouldnt sell very much of it.
I use... and you're going to die when you read this... but I use ye olde mother's protectant (the stuff designed for your interior dash) on my black. It keeps it black until the car gets dirty again, which in my case seems to be about a week. I just spray a car rag down with the mother's crap... and wipe down my black trim.
Note by my use of language above that I'm not a fan of this method... but it works in the interrum until I find a better way. I have been told that peanut oil works really great, and you follow this by using a plastic sealer over the top of it, but I haven't tried it yet and won't recommend the method until I've done it myself.
As far as why I don't use the other stuff... here goes:
Back to black leaves a waxy residue on plastic surfaces that isn't easy to get off, I suspect this is because it is, in fact, a wax. Eventually it will start to leave gray patches on your black... I don't find that very attractive..
Black Wow... is kinda on the spendy side and doesn't last much longer than what I'm doing already and the fact that application isn't a simple wipe on, wipe off process is a downer for me. I want to make my car look nice, but I don't want to spend hours polishing the black trim every two weeks. The application process involves using a pea sized amount and working that in, then moving onto the next spot.. otherwise your black ends up with a streaky apperance.. and if it rains... your black isn't so wow anymore...
When I get brave enough to try the peanut oil, I'll let you know how that worked, but for me... I wash my car once a week as it is, so swiping the trim with mother's after I'm done with everything else is a 5 minute job at most, and it stays nice for 7 days.

Melissa, if you do find something like that, please let me know. I'll be forever grateful.
I've tried at least 6 different products over the last three years and none of them last longer than a few weeks. And Black Wow, although the best, can last as little as three days. I found out during MOTD and the return trip when it rained so much. In that kind of rain, my trim looked like crap when I got back home (after a good bath).
It's my most challenging detailing problem... keeping the black plastic trim looking good.
