Navigation & Audio [eas] Official DICE iPod integration kit Q/A thread
DICE in the Convertible?
I know this information is in this thread somewhere......but at 29 pages this thread is too big to wade through!
I've got the 08 MCS convertible - with the AUX connector - and the multi function steering wheel. I'm currently using the AUX connector but I'd like to get the track name/info and was considering the DICE. I had an Alpine setup with the Ipod in my car before that and it worked nicely.
I don't like the i-drive because with the cabrio I don't want stuff that can easily "wander off".
I don't want the trunk mount because I can't be bothered with running cables back to the glovebox.
Can the DICE be mounted "up front" on the convertible and give you full track/album/artist name functionality?

Differences in Silverline
Hi Tom,
I recently purchased the Dice Silverline for an '06 Mini Cooper and didn't realize that there was any major functional differences between the old Dice IF and the Silverline. I have the radio interface with a 5th generation ipod (firmware 1.3). Aside from the text only showing up for certain songs and artists (I can't figure out why), I am let down that i can't control the ipod from the clickwheel and have text show up on the radio. In fact, unless I have the ipod switches on the dice box in the off position, I cannot use the clickwheel at all.
If I understand correctly, the older Dice kit allowed use of the clickwheel. I would like to know what features were added in the Silverline that requires "locking" the ipod while plugged in. It seems that the old Dice kit did nothing less than the Silverline (at least for my particular ipod) but also did not lock the ipod clickwheel. Also, is there any way to exchange the Silverline for the older Dice version?
Ideally, I must be able to use the clickwheel on the ipod and would still like to have artist/song text display on the radio, is that possible with the older Dice? (using radio controls simply takes way too long - like 5 minutes - to select one song out of 3000 or so - negating the benefit of keeping your hands on the wheel because you now have to take your eyes off the road for an entire 5 minutes). I hope I can figure out a way to control the ipod from the clickwheel and still have text - else I feel like I purchased a really expensive Aux input that sounds a little better.

Seems to me like you can either use the clickwheel and have no text or Dice function other than an input to your sound system, or you can control the ipod from the radio/Steering wheel and be unable to control it from the clickwheel because it is "locked." This depends on whether you have the switches on the box "on" or "off." I'm awaiting a reply from Tom, it should answer your question as well.
Are you looking for the factory solution or a portable unit?
My Dice install went well and I'm really enjoying it, but twice the songs started replaying, and I found that the iPod setting to replay songs had been set. I changed it back to Off, and a few days later it happened again. Spooky? Anyone experience this or have any thoughts or solutions?

Hello Tom... I was wanting to find some instruction on how to install the radio interface kit as well as which tools are needed to install the DICE kit... Also could you refer me to another thread on how to remove the OEM iPod kit... in order to install silverline DICE kit...

IIRC, you just need the Silverline Radio interface kit -- easy to install up front, and put the iPod in the glove box.
Yes, it was. This weekend I disconnected iPod, disconnected battery cables, touched them together, reconnected battery cables, reset iPod, then reconnected iPod. The Dice is now recognizing the iPod as attached and playing music, but I am still experiencing the Replay problem.

I'm sure I can, but I would have to take the radio out to get to the module. Shouldn't that number be on paperwork somewhere?
It's best to get the verification from the module itself.
Other squirelly behavior...sometimes (randomly) Dice iPod won't respond to track or playlist changes from either steering wheel control or h/u control. And sometimes h/u will change modes to radio when I'm trying to change the track or playlist on the Dice ipod. Bad Dice module?

Yes, I generally leave it rather than bringing it in each night. Mini is garaged. Is it supposed to be removed each night?
That's our reason, the iPod is going into hibernation mode at night. Simply disconnect/reconnect when power is on and all will be fine.
FWIW, we've left our iPods in the car for days without having them exhibit weird behaviour. Mind you, they are a 3rd Gen Nano and 2nd Gen iTouch, which have no moving parts inside.
The sleep mode is related to the iPod's battery, not media.
I read this and am still left wondering, does this work with our 05 NAV unit yet? I still have the original hooked up and waiting for the update to be able to see the text on the NAV screen. You guys have come out with a new unit, to support others, but haven't yet tackled the ongoing issues we have been requesting...
Compatible for Business Cassette, CD and Navigation/iDrive. Installation is simple for the DIY type and should take no longer than 20-30 minutes.
For those wanting a bit of a simplified system, the DICE Universal Car kit for iPod allows you to connect the iPod to your factory BMW radio within minutes using the included installation harness. If your radio is capable of receiving RDS broadcasts (Radio Data System - most MINI applications are), you will see Song Title & Artist information on the radio screen. Charging is also provided - keeping your iPod ready to go at all times.
For 00-04 MINIs without CD text support - this is your answer!
This is especially a plus for vehicles that do did not have text display with our current SILVERLINE kits or simply do not want the Clickwheel to lock when attached to the Dock Connector. The DICE Universal RDS iPod integration kit is a wired FM modulated (not transmitted) connection to your factory radio. A wired connection provides a direct statis-free connection, eliminating unwanted radio interference.
All control is performed via your iPod's Clickwheel for easy access to your music library. A fixed 128kbps bitrate ensures superior audio quality to that of FM transmitters or other add-on kits.
The DICE Universal RDS iPod module transfers information between the iPod and radio through an included iPod-specific docking cable, as if it were an original BMW accessory.
New features of DICE SILVERLINE iPod Integration kit include:
- Direct integrated connection, without the need for FM transmitters or cassette adapters
- Easy installation, about 30 minutes.
- Full Artist/Song Text display (RDS-supported Head Units)
- Full control of your iPod via the Clickwheel while in play
- Full charging mode for iPods through included dock connector
- Allows CD Changer Retention
