HK Operating Instructions???

I picked up my new '05 MCS on Saturday. Within all the manuals and paperwork, there was a "booklet" of about 6 pages on the Harmon-Kardon's operations.

Is that all MINI provides?

That's all I got with my MCSC, but it had all the pertinent info I needed.

Do you know?

What is the difference between FM1, FM2 and the FM-A setting?

Does Speed Volume really work? Is it automatic? The description provided in the booklet doesn't seem to match the way the HK works.

Thanks

FM1+2- Fm radio memory presets

FMA FM Radio AUTOMATIC SETTTING. When in this mode hold down the fm button and it will grab the 6 strongest radio stations in the area and make them the FMA presets, great for traveling.

Speed Volume does not work in H/K, at least it is not adjustable and if there is any compensation it is very subtle.

There is a pretty good run-down on the H/K that has been posted here IIRC and also at www.motoringfile.com for sure that explains in great detail what most of the settings do and offers one persons opinion on what the best settings are.

It works above 50 MPH and it is adjustable in the setup menu, the book does not detail it though.

I don't see that option in the Setup menu. Am I looking in the correct menu - the one with the Bass, Treble, etc.?

Yes there is an adjustment, however it has no effect with the H/K.

Nope. Hold down the musical note for about 3 seconds to get the setup menu. Press it to cycle through the options, the volume **** changes values.

But the speed volume adjustment does nothing with the H/K.

Mine (1/2005 production) only has 3 options:

1.) Tone Lin (or something like that, I think)
2.) Something about the NAV system (which I don't have)
3.) Reset

I'm not even sure what the first two do...

When you quickly depress the musical note you get the tone and balance and DSP options (BASS, TREBLE, FADE, BALANCE and then something like ELECTRONIC and then DRIVER). The first few (except for the DRIVER) are changed by the ****. Twist the **** to change the BASS, TREBLE, etc. The ELECTRONIC is the DSP, that, too, is changed by twisting the ****. You will cycle through things like MINI H/K, INSTRUMENTAL, FESTIVAL, SPATIAL and such. These are sound effects that change the tone and perceived orientation of the sound (like, is it coming from below or above). You'll have to experiment with those to see which sounds best to you. It may depend on the music itself, whether the top is up or down, the sunroof open or closed. The DRIVER setting modifies the tone to favor the driver side of the car for when you are alone in the vehicle.

To get at the "secret" option, you hold down the M button for about 10 seconds. (Do this after turning the unit off and then on again). Flip through the selections using the "+ -" toggle. GAL is the speed sensitive volume which may raise the volume or just the bass depending on speed. More details are here:

Cool - I'll try this out. What does the menu I was looking at do? I pressed the musical note for three or so seconds, and it popped up (it's not the Bass/Treble menu).

The TONE gets you to the TONE/BALANCE menu another way, the NAV sets the volume of the GPS voice (if you have GPS) relative to what you are listening to (RADIO, CD) and the RESET sets everything back to the factory settings.
