Will this work on my Prefacelift R53? Forgive my ignorance. Also the instructions show this working with only the original apple products (obviously it was pre-iphone) but will it work with the newer "Lightning" connectors?

Yes, this will work with a pre-facelift R53 (in fact any Mini Cooper S 2002 - 2006).

To use it with more recent lightning connector Apple products, you will need to purchase an adapter, such as this http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD...30-pin-adapter

Can you confirm that the system worked with a similar adapter? those adapters are not compatible with certain devices or functions.

I can't confirm as I don't have any apple products at hand to try the lightening adapter out. They must offer some basic "iPod" access/functionality otherwise I can't see why Apple would manufacture such an adapter. Maybe others on the forum can chime in with their experiences?
