Big black box in rear service panel, passenger side

I'm trying to install XM Direct with the Blitzsafe box. I was looking over the service compartments, and where other people have nothing I have a black box.

Is that my navigation system? I don't think there is space for the XM direct box back there. I think I see the looms mentioned in the other thread about XM Direct (XM Direct as OEM for $150).

Any suggestions? Help? Could I place the XM Direct box in the driver side rear service panel?

Jorge

Sorry I can't tell you what that box is, but...

Do you have the XM Direct box yet? It looks from the picture that it would fit...it's really pretty small. (4-1/4" x 3-3/4" actually...I just measured it) Can that box in the picture be slid forward at all or is it bolted in place?

If it won't fit there I'm not sure how you'll get the wiring around to the driver's side.

Argh

Any recommendations? I think it might fit, if a bit snug.

Does the XM Direct and Blitzsafe work with the Harman Kardon amp??

Yep, Definitely the H/K box. The offcial MINI kit for Sirius for the H/K cars has a cable that runs under the floor of the trunk to route the sat connector over to the drivers side IIRC, so you could buy that if you want to. However, as mentioned, the XM Direct will fit back there if you are creative. I originally stuffed it back there but got worried that every littel noicse back there was the XM Direct bouncing into something so I took the side panel off and mounted it to the back of the seat latch point. Sorry, no pictures.

That's what I found when I pulled the access panel. My Fiance wanted her Alpine Milti Disc CD changer installed as well though. I had to make an enclosure to house everything I needed.

The Xm Direct box will fit!

The Blitzsafe unit goes behind the XM box, and is secured with double sided tape to the inner skin of the MINI.

The XM box fits as shown - using industrial (exterior) grade double-sided tape to secure it to the HK amp unit. Note that you have to have the antenna connection pointed down, and RCA (phono) connections pointed up, to get all the cables in as well!

It's a snug fit, but it goes in nicely, and the door still fits on the compartment.

XM and HK work perfectly together - no issues.

Chris.

No problem

Enjoy your MINI and XM.

Just remember to turn off the XM now and again, so you can hear your new engine

okay...

I will install XM Direct with the Blitzsafe Box on Monday. Hopefully it'll all work. My car has both the HK package and the Navi System. I've gotten multiple answers from different people. Enfig says that it works with the Navi System. Logjam electronics says that it works with Navi System but not if you have DSP (I think DSP is the Harman Kardon speaker system, right?). Marc (from Blitzsafe) and CooperB (who, after the whole debacle in the other thread I seem to trust more than anyone) say it works with HK but not with the Navi System. Cooper seems to think that the Navi System shouldn't be a problem, but that he has no experience mouting XMD and the Blitzsafe Box in a Mini with OEM Navigation.

Why would it not work with the Navi System? Would the combination of HK + Navi create a problem? I checked the panel and the wires are there, as CooperB showed in his thread.

I really want this to work. I'll report back so that everyone knows for future reference. Anyone with experience mouting this setup with OEM Nav and the HK.

It will be very useful to get a clear answer on the compatibility. The navi system has extra signals into the HU - these signals share a connector which, for example, prevents you plugging in the MINI "AUX input" kit. Except if you are smart enough, you can remove the wires from one connector and put them in the other - they are not the same *pins*, just different pins in two connectors. If the compatibility is simply limited to such issues, it should be easy to resolve.
I can't see any reason why the HK amp (DSP) should affect compatibility, unless as discussed here it is physically in the way.

I look forward to your results - success or failure!

aux input

That's weird. I have the Navi System and the Aux Input. Both stock and they work well.

I'll let you all know on Monday. Cheers!

Eureka!

Ok. For the record:

XM Direct + Blitzsafe works with a 2004 Mini with the H/K package, Navigation System and the Aux Input.

I was able to install the XM Direct and the Blitzsafe in the rear passenger side service panel. A snug fit due to the H/K amp, but it worked out great. I wasn't able to pass the antenna through the grommet and down the liner through the pillar and down to the service panel. Can anyone help me with that? I tried getting the antenna cable through the rollaway rubber loom (back hatch) but I could not get to the roof lining. Also, how do I get it to the back pillar? Does it get stuck on the way down?

Thanks!

Jorge

Mine got stuck on the way down and it took me 15 minutes to get it freed up.

If I had to do it again I would defiitely take the seats and side panel out, then you can reach right up inside the pillar cover and grab the connector easily. It is also much easier to mount the tuner box that way. AS for the roof liner, that was relatively easy once I rolled the rubber lip back all the way across.
