Is a stereo just begging to be stolen?

I'm tempted to install an aftermarket stereo in my r53 for features like proper iPod compatibility, bluetooth, and or aux in. (I have the stock with the primitive iPod adapter).
But it's been my experience that aftermarket stereos get stolen, regardless of how good or bad they are. Factory stereos don't.

I lived in a very high break in area in college and most of my friends cars were broken into. My car of the time survived unmolested until I move to a much safer place after college.

Any thoughts on stereos attracting criminals?

IMO most don't go for a single din unit anymore, but if it still happens where you live then I would either wait and just leave nothing special in the car or move.

Stereo thefts are so 1990's....
Most cars have integrated stereo's....so no demand for the older type....
GPS's on the other hand....cell phones....i-pods....still big and with smash and grab quick cash junkies.......

and back in the 90's my car was broken into and the factory radio stolen

I replaced with the factory model, and IT was stolen

I then replaced with a cheapo and the car was never touched again

An aftermarket head unit isn't completely without risk, but these days thieves usually break into a car not for the stereo, but hoping to find other things. Headunits are no longer an attractive target because of low demand.

The other option is to upgrade your iPod adapter: http://www.ecstuning.com/News/MINI_C...008/ES2226071/

I just pop off the faceplate and throw it in the glovebox if I have to park somewhere shady.

This is all you needed to say. Car crime is junkies and kids. A $10 baggie is a $10 baggie and they'll smash a window to get it.

Take a look at the Audiovox Media Bridge

Full integration and still uses the stock head unit.
