Navigation & Audio OEM navigation upgrade-Hopefully a how-to guide.
Navigation & AudioAudio upgrades, bluetooth, and navigation discussions surrounding the Clubman (R55), Cooper and Cooper S (R56), and Cabrio (R57) MINIs.
Great news Erik and well done.
did you just rotate the CID end of the cable or both ends?
Can’t believe I bought two cables that were reversed but hopefully that’s the issue for me to.
Does your blower fan work with the IHKA retro fit?
I rotated just the CID end of the cable. As for the blower fan, I had to reuse my pre-lci board and put the components on the black lci panel and confirmed working just fine. I had read somewhere that if you want to use the lci control board on a pre-lci you have to solder some sort of wires for it to work.
Not working (Probably need to add VOs for them to work)
Bluetooth communication
USB stick media
Navigation (Disabled on home screen)
Working:
CD
FM/AM
AUX
This cable had a pink tab which allows you to remove the connector easily from the CID side This is the retrofitted pre-lci board on an lci panel.

I had to do exactly the same in my IHKA. Couldn’t find the thread you mention on soldering of wires and seemed the obvious choice in the end just to swap out the electronics.
The Nav needs FSC codes to activate it. If your pre LCI console had usb then it should work with the new one. The MASK unit should have BT built in so would just be a VO change.
To get updated maps on to the MASK though you will need a separate USB port( usually in the glove box) which is only for the map updates. If you don’t have one you’ll need to install one if you intend activating the NAV and this plugs in to one of the HSD sockets on the back( curry coloured one next to the LVDS socket)

Yeah currently researching the FSC codes for nav and not having any luck only finding stuff about using an emulator, if you know anything please let me know. As for enabling BT what VO code needs to change? I think I have 6NE, wonder if I need to remove it and add 6ND. Yeah I do have the extra USB port but haven't gotten a chance to wire it to the glove box yet.
EDIT:
Calling it a day, tried connecting something to the AUX port and there was no audio. So that is not working either. I also added the other VO codes that I was missing and that still did not enable bluetooth. I Couldn't find anything on FSC codes for nav either, just information about using an emulator so I might just go that route.

Erin take a look here if you have the vin of the donor car. https://bimmer.work/vin/t765ca5e75c0...18a05/options/
it will give you the coding options to compare with yours.
Also try FSC.Codes for the NAV. Cheaper than Mini. I have read that only mini can supply the codes but they were from very old posts so my guess is that might work for you. I haven’t used them yet as I still have got my screen working. Will do though as soon as I do. It will not defeat me!!

Also did you have BT and AUX prior to the retro fit? If not you may need to swap around the wiring or even add some for the microphone etc to work.

I only have the last 7 of the VIN pulled from tool32 from the HU TY27183 so kind of hard to figure out what equipment it had to begin with. I bought this unit from ebay about 4 years ago so no way of pulling up the original listing anymore.
My current pre-lci r56 has bluetooth and aux, I think I need to install the combox, as I didn't see a bluetooth logo on the LCI HU I installed. Thankfully I bought a BN2000 as well with this HU. I'll see about tackling that today and see if I have any luck. Have you not been able to resolve the screen issue yet even by rotating the cable?
EDIT
Received response from fsc.codes the CIC retrofit codes won't work with the CHAMP2 units, I don't think there is any way to get those FSC codes without going to the dealer tbh.

Expensive option Erik going via the stealers! Emulator maybe the option.
When you have the 2000 fitted and coded I think the rest will work to.
Yeah. I managed to pull the HSD plug apart and find the correct orientation to bring the screen to life thanks.

Hi Erik,
How did you get on with the install of the BN2000?
Did that get everything up and running?
As for the FSC codes. Looking at what is in the pack would activate the maps as it contains 001B but voice activation wouldn’t as the codes are different.

Hey Mike, haven't had a chance to work on the BN2000, currently tackling a PCV cover issue. I did go ahead and order an emulator, I'll let you know if it works once it arrives in case you decide to go that route or not. I will try working on the BN2000 this weekend and let you know my findings. Also keep me posted if you figure out the FSC codes.
Well I finally got a chance to finish installing everything on my pre-lci r56. The headunit did not have built in bluetooth and required a commbox. I bought a few years back a telematic commbox. I referenced the following wiring diagram:
Since this was a telematic one I had to connect the power cable to pin 2 instead of pin 1 for it to be recognized and powered.
After installing that I was able to get bluetooth media streaming. I then went searching for the FSC codes all over the web, I had no luck, I reached out to a friend at the dealership and he had no idea what an FSC code was. Anyway... I bought this emulator from aliexpress
$50 and it worked like a charm. The only thing I noticed is that when coding you sometimes have to try multiple times until it finally connects properly. After coding the correct FA codes, all the options appeared on the main menu of the headunit. One of my biggest issues was that I was running maps from 2011, searched the web for the MOVE maps and couldn't find any way of getting them from free. I found a page that did give you the map downloads for free but it still required you to enter an FSC code.
Paid 14 pounds and was given the FSC code in less than 24 hours. I entered the FSC code and the map update started. The update took forever as I used a Sandisk Cruzer blade 64gb but it kept on disconnecting when updating the maps, my first hypothesis is that this usb uses a lot of current which shorts out the headunit USB connection but it will work.
Anyway, the maps finally got installed after driving for like 2 weeks, my headunit upgrade from CCC to the CIC CHAMP has finally been concluded. If anyone has any trouble feel free to reach out as I was a total loss and would be happy to help anyone.
Hi erik,
I’m planning to retrofit Visual Boost on my r56 LCI and I have some questions for you :
- Did you use ICOM or K+DCAN for the coding ?
- Did you have to change the VIN into the Combox and The Champ2 ?
- What coding did you have to do apart from the FA codes ?
- Does the FSC emulator requires specific coding on the car or is it just plug and play ?
Thank you for your answers

I used a K+DCAN cable for coding as I don't think the ICOM works with the R56.
Nothing needs to be changed on the combox or champ2 unit. In fact I would highly recommend not messing with the VIN of the donor champ unit because then the emulator will no longer work.
The only additional coding aside from FA would be coding the combox as well but this is optional. If you don't code it it will show up with the donor bluetooth name, in my case the combox came from a BMW and it was showing under bluetooth as BMWXXXXX after coding it showed up correctly as MINIXXXXX
My combox is from an R60, so the name should be fine, but just in case, how do you code it to get the name show as MINIXXX ?
With the emulator, does everything work as expected? I’ve seen posts mentioning that some emulators can interfere with Mini Connected features and PDC.
I also came across a post from someone on a BMW forum who seems to be able to generate FSC codes for free. So, instead of using an emulator, I’ll try that first to see if it works. My only concern is: how do I input the FSC codes into the CHAMP2?
Yeah in that case you can leave as it and it should work. If you want it to have the last 5 of your vin shown then I would just code it.
The link to the emulator I posted works fine, I do sometimes have issues connecting the car to ista or ncsexpert, but after several tries it does end up connecting. My r56 does not have PDC sensors so I am unsure if it has the common issue that other have reported with emulators. As far as other features (nav, sat radio, mini connected) they work perfectly.
The FSC code generation is only applicable to true CIC headunits, you can't code the FSCs to the champ2 units. I wanted to do the complete OEM coding but not even the dealership could help me. I would recommend going the emulator route, unless of course you figure out how to code with generated FSCs but as I said before, everyone says it is impossible and couldn't find any information anywhere on the web.
Picked up all the parts, and I’m planning to install everything next week. I’ll try to take some pictures and post them here in case it helps someone who wants to do the same retrofit in the future. I also made my own diagram since I’m installing a full OEM navigation system in a car that currently just has the basic Mini CD radio, so I'll have to replace my roof antenna base and run the GPS antenna wire through the car.
Looking to Add Bluetooth to My 2009 Mini Cooper – Any Tips or Guides?
Hey everyone,
I have a 2009 Mini Cooper (R56) with the Mini CCC system but unfortunately, it doesn’t come with Bluetooth or USB port. It only has an AUX input. I really want to add Bluetooth functionality for music streaming.
I’ve checked the system and there are no Bluetooth options available, and I don’t have any buttons on the steering wheel either. Does anyone here know how to add Bluetooth to my car?
Does anyone know where the BN2000 power connects in the fuse box, i dont like the idea of splicing cables. i have seen T30, but that does not ring any bells.
So i have everything connected (without Combox) and installed in my 2013 Cooper R56 utilizing a Nav unit from a 2015 Countryman. I also added a Bimmertech CarPlay MMI Prime Retrofit to get wireless carplay, and i have music, display, etc. Unfortunately i need the AUX port working to play music from the CarPlay unit. I am really not wanting to connect in the Combox with all of the additional hassle. I had assumed i could simply use the existing AUX port that is already wired in to the car, but seems like that is not working (or new unit doesnt recognize).
Anyone worked out a way to get the AUX working without a Combox? Any help is much appreciated!!!!
You could try and install a BlueMusic Bluetooth Adapter. That's what I did in my R58 and it plays through the AUX selected input, but it only works if you able to select AUX for input. I know that the actual AUX input port under the AC/switches won't work unless you have the Combox installed. I was also able to retain all the steering wheel controls, such a big plus.
Are you able to select AUX on the interface? I had to turn off the factory bluetooth module and then it automatically went to the BlueMusic adapter.
Hi, I decided to go with installing the combox and have all the parts but having trouble finding the cable to connect the Bluetooth module to the combox (per the pic part 8 to 1). The thread does not call out the cable specifically, and hoping not to build one myself- thanks !
I realized I never posted an update here, so here it is, one year later.
The initial reason for doing this retrofit was to get an OEM-looking CarPlay system, which is possible by adding what’s called an MMI box between the OEM navigation display and the CHAMP2 unit. However, since I’m very meticulous, I wanted everything to be fully functional (navigation, MINI Connected, etc.).
If your only objective is to get a display to plug an MMI box into, you won’t need to fit an FSC emulator or a new roof antenna unit. I would also recommend getting a MINI Visual Boost unit instead of a MINI Navigation System unit. That’s what I originally planned to do, but where I live most cars were fitted with the navigation system, and the Visual Boost is very rare.
I got all the parts from a junkyard, from an R60 and an R58 except for the roof antenna, which I purchased on eBay because it’s not the same as the R56 on these cars. To ensure cross-compatibility between these models and my car, I used RealOEM.com and checked the part numbers carefully.
I spent hours removing all the parts and the wiring harness, which was really a pain to get. The only issue was that the wire colors and connectors were not exactly the same as on the R56, so I had to make a few small modifications. During the process, I also broke the MOST optical cable, so I ordered an aftermarket replacement from AliExpress, which ended up working perfectly.
I bought this FSC emulator to enable Navigation and MINI Connected.
Then I spent about a week wiring everything. While I was at it, I also did a few additional modifications. I made a more detailed post on Reddit explaining everything : link here.
And one year later, everything is still working perfectly. The only issue I had was a loose ground connection behind the nav unit, which caused the display and the iDrive controller to stop working. I had to pull the whole unit out to fix it.
