iPhone 4 Connectivity Issue
Hey Everybody -
I just got my first Mini, a 2010 S. I love it. Everything is awesome except for one small problem:
I'm using and iPhone 4 and everything is fine; music plays (which I can control from the wheel), bluetooth works fine, makes and receives calls no problem. My one issue is the voice control. According to what I've read, in order to setup the voice dialing feature you first need to download the contents of your phone in to the car's "phone book." This is supposed to automatically happen when you pair the phone for the first time. Well, it didn't happen.
Is this a limitation of the new iOS 4.0 operating system? Or does it have something to do with the sync cable that Mini provides? Anyone else having this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Are you looking to use the voice control for controlling the music playback or are you looking to voice dial a number in your contact list?
You should be able to voice dial by pressing the button on the MFSW. It is the top button on the left side. The voice command is either "dial" or "call". I think either one works. If that doesn't work, I believe it is a manual process to enter the names/numbers into the MINIs computer system.
I seriously doubt the system will allow any voice control for the music controls.

I had the same issue with my Droid when I got my 2010 Clubman. I finally realized that the car will read your address book and have those available to you by using the buttons and rotary **** through the radio interface.
The voice dial is basically a separate phone book that you set up with your names and numbers. You need to record the names and the numbers with your voice. It doesn't relate to the phone's contact list.
I thought it worked like a Bluetooth headset and the voice control in the phone where you can call anybody in your contacts list.
Unless I'm wrong and I'm missing something, it's a separate "phone book".

I'm on my third cell phone since getting my MINI and I have been able to voice dial anyone in the phones contact list with all three phones (Motorola Razr V3m, iPhone 3G, and my current iPhone 4).
not sure what you guys are on about…
I push a button on my steering wheel,
hear "please say the name",
I say "beverly smith",
and the car responds with "do you want to dial 'tower theaters'?"
What could be simpler?!

I'm pretty new here, and a new Mini owner so am not completely up on these things.
I have an iPhone4, and 2008 Clubman with BT but no Nav, so it might operate differently. I've found that the voice control is only for trained voice tags and it will not control the address book that syncs from the iPhone to the head unit/BT module. If people have speaker-independent (untrained) voice control over their complete synced address book, then I think this is either because they have a newer vehicle or it has Nav (?), or that the voice recognition is being done on your phone, and not in the head unit/BT module. The iPhone4 now supports voice dialing (and iPod control) on the phone iteself but it's pretty clumsy in my opinion, and requires pushing and holding the home button for a while until it goes into voice recognition mode.

To all of you reading this thread.
For cars with NAV form 08 thru 10 you will have the ability to use voice dialing form your phones contact list ONLY if you phone supports "Voice Dialing" thur the "Hands Free Profile". This on some phones my be a differnt profile thatn the one used for a BT Headset.
For car "with out" NAV you will NOT have the ability to "voice dial" form you phones contacts, the car does not support this feature. You will have to manually set up the voice tags in the car.
More info for Non Nav cars can be found here about how to set up voice tags for voice dialing

Also of note to all of you mat be that the "FIRST" time you pair you car and the phone it can take up to 3+ hours (some people have reported more than 4 hours) for the car to download all of your contacts. After that initial download the recheck and down load each time your car connects to the phone should take less than 30 seconds.
