Exchanged my Garmin nuvi 360 for a nuvi 660 because...

I originally bought my Gamin nuvi 360 on the 4th due to its compact size,bluetooth,MP3 feature, reliability and reputation.I even updated the latest firmware from Garmin and the maps that are available to bring it current. Now having tested it in my local area it was giving me the wrong directions even back to my home.So instead of exchanging it for another nuvi 360 I went ahead and exchanged it for the Garmin nuvi 660 4.3 widescreen.Works like a charm in my area and since I am driving a long distance next week from Florida to Minnesota and then back I couldn't afford to get lost on the way there since my daughter graduates high school next Friday.

NICE

Was it making you make right hand turns until you
were back where you started?

My wife has the older one Streetpilot I think.

Sometimes it wants to send you around the block..

^^Thank you and yes it was sending me in the opposite direction when I selected Go Home and it had me go north of where I lived not south to my home address so I knew something wasn't right with it.Must have been a defective GPS that I bought.

Anyway I already added the custom mini.srf to it so my CR MINI Cooper S is following the map as I drive and I added the MINI splash screen when it first turns on.Both of which I got from the dedicated thread on NAM on how to add them and the supplied links.

The 660 has the traffic option doesn't it? How do you find it works for you?

^^Yes it does which is in the power cord.I haven't tried it out yet in my area but I will be using it for my long drive to Minnesota from Florida next week.It does state that not all areas will pick up the traffic option though as it is still limited.

Right, thanks. My main area of concern about traffic is the NY/NJ and CT areas with the nightmares of the NJ Turnpike, George Washington Bridge, and just about anywhere on 95. Still switching between two radio stations that usually don't tell me what I need to know.

I located the cities where it would work in the U.S.

Traffic wasn't worth the cost to me (I have a 660). I used it for the free 3months that come with it. For trips between NJ and ME (2 in that 3 months) it was a waste. I was constantly in traffic that it didn't show and it showed me traffic that didn't exist (this was in route between NY and MA, where the signal was supposed to be very good). We ended up just finding the traffic as we got to it and using the maps to go around it.

Thanks Jim R., and thank you, too, tachicardia. I'm sorry to read that your experience with the traffic info wasn't any good. Am I right that you were dealing with the GWB and 95N, or no...maybe you went up through western CT?

When I look at that site Jim posted, I can see there does not seem to be any coverage up in NH,VT and Maine.

My route extended route 287 to route 95 through CT to route 91 (or is it 93, I never remember) and 495 through MA.

Unfortunately I know that the lower CT part of 95N is often a parking lot.

My main area of interest is usually coming home (to Westchester County in NY) from the southern or mid atlantic states on the NJ Turnpike and whether or not to take the GWB or make a quick exit to take the Garden State... There's just too much volume - add in an accident or never ending construction and That all said, I'm sure the nuvi is helpful for finding your way off the beaten track where the paper maps really don't show much.

I'm still holding out for a while...hoping for the 700 series to drop...but then I've read that the 660 has a stronger antenna...at least that's what I think I've read.

MINIspud is this what you're looking for: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=115379

I had my 6 month old 660 do that (wanted me to make a square) I just took it out of the "take me home mode" and then back in - it recalculated and everything was normal again. Might be something to write Garmin about.........

BTW, I had the traffic thing pop up one day and I didn't believe it - and got stuck in a 2 hr jam when I had plenty of time to change my route - be forewarned, that thing seems to work!

JCR1960, are you using the factory mount or do you use the suction cup mount that comes with the unit? What I'm trying to figure out is, will the 660 fit in the same mount as the 360? and does it still use the same hardwired connection? Thanks.
