semi-audio n00b seeks amplification advice
As most of you who frequent the audio forum know, I resently installed new speakers, which rule. However, the low end is now lacking due to power demands.
Does anyone know of a speaker line-in 2 channel amp that puts out anywhere from 50 to 90 watts RMS? I want to keep my stock head unit.
Is there much faith in $30-60 amps? I see some online by such makers as Pyramid, Pyle, and Power Acoustik.
Another option entirely is to try out an Infinity BassLink. If that meets my low end need, then I'll be done, if not, then I'll still need an amp.
I just want to know of some amps that will work with the stock head unit and that can power my Infinity Kappas:
2 ohm, but work as 4 ohm with the stock deck
2-90 watts RMS (270 watts peak power)
frequency response: 45-35,000 Hz
sensitivity: 93 dB

I can't imagine you haven't looked at Crutchfield? I've limited this search to amps with speaker level inputs. I'm sure there are technical reasons to stay away from the really cheap amps and hopefully some audiophiles will chime in about sound quality ramifications. My experience is crap is crap and it's better to stay within a minimum quality threshold. Once you find some choices, eBay might be a good alternative to keep the price down. Also, you may get lucky with Craigslist.
As you know, I'll be following you in this endeavor pretty soon, and I'm hoping to get away with just speaker replacements as well. If I do need to get an amp, I am probably going 4 channel so that I don't cut off options for the rear speakers. Have you considered this? They cost a little more, but to me it's worth it.

Does anyone know if an amp by Profile is any good?

One other thing, would a speaker wire to RCA adapter do the same basic function as a line output converter? For that mater, could I take old RCA cables I have laying around and cut them to make the adapter?

I have decided that for something like an amp, you cannot skip out on cost. Therefore, I will save my pennies for the Infinity Reference 475a 4-channel amplifier.
I have found it for about $155 on Amazon. The wiring kit and line output converters will come from Best Buy. I have been getting a lot of information from a guy there. He has this amp and Infinity Kappas like me, he hooked it all up to his stock head unit and it works very well.

I have an old Alpine stereo that still rocks. It's a CDA 9855 model and the sound quality is great. The guy at the stereo corner has the same one in his car and says he loves his and wouldn't recommend that I buy another one to install in the MINI.
Maybe you just have a cheap Alpine, or some bad wiring?
