Subs in 6x9 locations
Has anyone else thought about using the 6x9 location for subs only? Is there an air tight enclosure there? I havn't seen any 6x9 subwoofers but JL Audio makes 6x8 component speakers that could be used for low end only. In professionel installs rear speakers are rarely used as they mess with the front sound stageing. My thought anyways.
Using 6X9's should work out pretty well. Even though the area behind the speaker isn't totally airtight, there's enough isolation between the front of the speaker and the back to make it work.
Also, a 6X9 has almost as much cone surface area as an 8" sub, so if you can find on that has good linear excursion (cone travel), you should be able to move a good amount of air with it.
I guess it's just a matter of finding a 6X9 that's not a coaxial/triaxial, since you just need it for the bass reproduction.

I have a pair of old school Kicker 6x9 free-air subs sitting in the garage. Should be nice with some power to them.
As for current sources, Parts Express sells 6x9 subs from Tangband
you an also cut out the 6x9 hole a bit and use an 8" midbass on an MDF baffle. Elemental Designs makes a nice, inexpensive product that works well. Also...JL used to sell some IB8's meant for this type install, if you can find them still.

CDTAudio is a relatively unknown brand to most people, but is well respected by car audio enthusiasts.
I think Ian (gbmini) at one point had some 6" JL Audio "subs" installed in the 6x9 openings in one of his MINIs...

Subs
I first went with 6 X9 true subs, but now have 8" ED subs in sealed 1 cu ft enclosures. They fit behind the stock grills and are powered by a 400 watt amp under the drivers seat. There are a couple of pics in my gallery

I was thinking of the same idea, except I was hoping to use Kicker 8" L5's or L7's. With my first stereo for Charlie, I went with subtle and "factory look" (except the trunk). Now I think I'm going for a little more "in your face".
Don't know how its all going to work but the idea was Kicker SS 6.5 components up front, the 8" subs in the rear location and the amps in the trunk.

i emailed then about those CDTs. They said they won't go low enough to be subs. If you look at their frequency response it shows it won't go below 45Hz. Here's what he said:
"Sorry but their specs show their capability. they won't go to true sub bass. But I have had customers mention they were using them in Mini's. I never got any feedback on results though"
