Short Antenna with Navigation

Anyone on here running a shorty antenna with factory navigation on an R56?
Is the receiver for the GPS in the base, and if so, will a short antenna affect reception? What brands are compatible? Thanks

Braden

Does the NAV-equipped R56 have the same screw-in mast antenna as the non-NAV version, or does it have one of those "shark fin"-type antennas?

If it has a mast antenna, you're probably safe replacing it. The GPS signal is at a frequency that's ten times higher than the highest AM/FM radio frequency, so I'd be very surprised if the NAV system depended on the radio antenna for anything.

Obviously, you'd want to leave the antenna base alone, and just replace the screw-in mast.

No, its def not a shark fin type, it looks to be a screw in type, I guess I should just try to unscrew it was afraid I might break something.

I'm running Craven Speed's Stubby (not the super stubby) with the factory NAV. No problem with NAV reception. Others have posted that the NAV antenna is in the base.

Like the sat radio antenna which people have been hooking up their external devices to, is there a NAV antenna pre-included in all cars. If so, could I hook up my Garmin Nuvi to it?

I just installed an external amplified Gilsson antenna. It definitely helps in urban jungles.
