Anybody tried coast to coast in their MCS. Currently waiting for the production number on my 03 MCS so hope to have it by June/July/Aug of this year.

I want to coast to coast the MCS. Philadelphia to San Francisco. Anybody tried it? Routes? Ideas?

Incidentally my parents drove across Australia in a 1970's Mini in 1973.

It just flows through my veins!!!

 

We haven't done it yet - but are planning to go from Virginia to So Cal later in the year - one way baby!!!

 

I know that MINIClo has a big road trip planned to go from Socal to the East Coast. I also know that she is QUITE excited about it.

I've done it a few times - but not in an 'S'! ... others on this site have long distance trips after delivery (like TN to OR) and can shed light on the 'break-in' part of it ...

In 1977 I drove a '77 Mini 1000 from NY to WA in 51 hours (so it was an Interstate trip) and then on the way back tried a different tack - drove 24 hours, crashed 12, drove 24, crashed 12 ... but didn't touch an Interstate. That return took a bit longer but, of course, was much more enjoyable ...
In 1978 I moved to Seattle ... I crammed as much as I could in the back of a 1967 Morris Minor 1000 Traveller and tried to do as much site-seeing as I could ... the Minor wasn't going to set any speed records but it still took only 6 days. That trip was to set a record for stares, though ... the starter solenoid had a loose contact but I didn't have to fix it right away 'cause I could use the hand crank, and I was driving on the right ...

Those trips were on the North Line so advise about routing from PA to CA would only be impressions of bits and pieces of road travelled on other trips, but in general I guess the best times are those that aren't rushed - take your time, take in the scenery, find the good twisties and enjoy the Motoring!

 

If anyone is coming through Denver this summer, let me know and we might be able to coordinate a MINI5280 event around it. :smile:

 

I might be taking my Mini S form NY to Yellowstone National Park in May, I have to teach my friend how to drive stick first. Do you think it can be done in 10 days :smile:

... see above ... actually it all depends on how much you want to see on the way ... but 4 days each way and a couple in between to see the Park works ...

 

I drove from Westchester MINI in Emsford NY to Denver in a day and a half (I-80 most of the way). Obviously you have to be a sick individual to be averaging 1200 mile days, but that said... if you have 10 days figure on it taking you about 2.5 days each way to get to Yellowstone (if you're like me and just want to pound down the miles and spend most of your time at your destination). That still leaves quite a bit of time in the park.

 

Possibly a lot of driving though. Coast to coast is about 3000 miles driving at 24 hours a day that's 2 day's of solid driving there and the 2 day's back. You will have to figure that you will probably not want to drive more than 12 hours a day so that's probably about 4 days each way. If there's two of you, your time could be reduced.

Plan it out (that's what I have done). The trick is and this is a challenge is to make sure you have enough gas to make it through the interior where there is a whole lot of nothing (I have taken a lot of advice from friends who have done it).

I am planning to take about three weeks to do it in but then I work for a UK company who give us lots of vacation time.

I'm still figuring out my itinerary, but I think I'm leaving L.A. on Easter Sunday, heading for Santa Fe, NM to visit my best g/f from high school. Then on to Texas, where there's a whole mess of Texan MINIacs to visit and motor, and stay with. Then through Nawlins, 'Bama, and on to Florida to visit sndwave, then on up to Deal's Gap in North Carolina, to tame the mighty Dragon Tail: 318 curves in 11 miles of road! Tee hee! At some point, I'll be heading back through Denver, to hang with my MINI5280 pals! To be continued......

 

it's even a full days drive from Denver, and the trip from Denver to Wyoming only takes an hour. Yellowstone is more than a little off the beaten path.

Just a route suggestion that I can't resist mentioning - Glacier National Park, Montana/Canadian border. Going-To-The-Sun Road across the Continental Divide. I cannot imagine a more beautiful place possibly existing on earth. It's not usually open until at least mid-June on account of the snowbanks.

 

Okay everybody, get this:
I'm currently stationed in Germany. Received my Mini Cooper S just last night. I am shipping it to Baltimore next week.

 

Like to suggest the finish to your route. I traveled this route on a Motorcycle. If you make a big smiley face and find yourself in in the SW. See the grand canyon, go to vegas (valet the car).....then travel west on 160-190 to Death valley. Head toward Lone Pine 136. Then go north on 395 to south lake tahoe. Drive around the lake and off u go to San Fran..

a southern gal at heart......BTW Clo..I am booked and ready to
board in Robbinsville. I wonder if they have those connecting
