Aftermarket radio with OEM navi question

Has anyone added an aftermarket radio to the OEM navi? I was thinking that since it has the "iDrive" controller on the console and all of the controls on the cd drive being dupicated somewhere else I wouldn't lose any functionality of the OEM system except the CD player but that would be in the new unit anyway. I could still use nav if I wanted to (which is probably what I'd do) or leave up any of the other screens (possibly the trip computer or other car info) and only lose the voice prompts (I have a portable I use for long trips anyway) and gongs, etc. I really don't see a down side.

After all of that rambling, my question is this; is the ribbon cable connecting the two halves the same? If so, is there more space behind the screen since it's not a full radio, just a display? It would also be nice to duplicate the display from the new unit on the OEM unit but that's something to try later on.
