Looking to buy a CAI for an R53 MCS. Hoping to get a Alta, but being a broke college student makes the New price on one a little steep for me. Open to any CAI though,

This is my setup, very similar to the alta but cost only $120. Megan heat shield/ k&n reverse conical filter(open top)

so does the ECU still attach to the side of that heat shield then?

It attaches to the oem airbox bottom half, the heat shield doesn't affect it.

Okkk. Is there any benefit in replacing the stock tubing that connects to the air filter? Is it quieter with it?

I looked at that one, for that price u can get a better one. I prefer the open top for more whine, plus the filter that comes with that looks tiny.

I feel ya!

I just bought my Alta a couple weeks ago off here for $170 used... Have seen others go around that price on here

Ballin on a budget FTW

Good luck, and the option bavmotors mentioned looks great too. I only opted for one with the silicone hose due to my factory hose developing a small crack and needing to be replaced anyway.

will this venair intake hose fit the alta box/filter ok?? I mean it is half the price of alta hose, and is also silicone?

$240 for the system is much more reasonable to me. I have been keeping an eye on the marketplace here for the Alta cai's but they sell fast..

I don't see why it wouldn't. I did a quick search on the forums and a few people seem to have used the Venair hose without problems. I doubt there is much quality difference between them.

If I had to do it again, I would probably use that Venair hose with the Megan shield http://www.meganracing.com/product.a...d=700&catid=79
and a AEM dry flow or K&N universal filter... Total cost would be around $175-185

Yea I agree, seems like a better bang for the buck. To me, the only reason cai's are so expensive is due to the fact that anyone has the capability to drop one in by themself. And I'm assuming the Megan heat shield uses the bottom of the OEM air box? But with that said, here is the setup I am going to get, the Megan heat shield, venair intake hose, and is the K&N RU-4950 the filter that is in the K&N system? If so, that will all cost me a total of $165 shipped. Very happy

Really recommend a open top filter to take advantage of the cowl mod

will the JCW alta filter, fit in the megan heat shield? it only appears to be 1 inch wider? the inlet diameter is fixable, but wasnt sure about the width of the filter clamp

It might not be flexible enough to clamp on with a solid seal, but maybe.
