Is it possible to remove the black cushioned portion of the door "armrest"? Does the door panel have to be removed to accomplish this, and if so, how is the cushioned portion attached?? I was thinking of changing mine to red leather ('02 R/B "S", since I've already chaged the shift boot and handbrake cover to red leather. I'm also considering painting the tubular portion Chili Red along with the central downtubes.

NOSUV4ME,
Aloha and welcome to NAM,
Yes you can remove the leather armrest pad but it is glued onto the armrest tube. Mine got loose and had to be glued back on. You can gently try to pry it off but the paint can easily scratch so watch out. The leather rest is attached to a curved piece of plastic with two small pegs that fit into two notches on the tube. Without the glue it does not stay in place.

I think it is not so easy to remove the door tubes from the door panel.

Thanks for the info. Do the two pegs fit into the top or bottom of the tube? Thanks again.

D2MINI -

I have pictures in a personal gallery on MINI2.COM under THUEY. I'll try to attach one of the interior shots here. My plan is to replace the brake handle with a red leather wrapped unit, as well as the shift **** with a polished Whalen unit in an attempt to get away from the Black vinyl/leather which I feel conflicts with the Red. If you are interested in boot covers I could have a set made up for you and I could send you a leather sample before you decided. Cost is $65 for both boots - including shipment in the US.

Oh and on painting the door tubes and downtubes, I have some pics in my gallery of my BRG ones and there is a thread detailing this work.

Thanks for the info. I also have an 02 and remember seeing your info on painting the down tubes and ytubes, but I don't remember it being discussed as to how the ytubes are attached to the door panels. Can you enlighten me? Thanks again.

I have a 2003 and when I took delivery the passenger side arm rest fell off the horizontal door tube. I appeared to be just glued on the surface of the tube since the tube had two small 3x4mm indents for very small pegs on the back of the armrest. It would not press back into place and the location of the indents on the tube were facing the passenger but not all the way up to the top edge of the tube. There were no screws that I could see or detect and nothing appeared to be broken. I told them to fix it and they just glued it back on. It has never come off.
