For those with a Whalen ****

I have ordered a Whalen **** and will be replacing the stock boot with a HC one to match the rest of the interior. The dealer is doing the work as part of my purchase deal.

As the Whalen **** does not use the same setup as the stock ****, I was going to instruct them to install the boot inside out, then attach the top with a zip tie, then fold it right side in and install as normal, placing the ball on top per Whalen's instructions. If the zip tie is tight enough and the boot is tall enough, it should abut the bottom of the ****.

This is my theory, anyone have any experience to suggest otherwise?

Thanks for the help!

I had the dealer install my Whalen ****, and the service guy suggested that very method of attaching the stock boot to the Whalen ****, all on his own. I told him not to bother, since it seems to stay 'up' just fine, and I like the look of the piece below the 'ball', at least part of which would have been covered if the boot was attached.

That's just like ours. Not attached but stays decently snug to the **** itself.

Same here. The stiffness of the boot allows it to sit up against the bottom of the shaft part of the WSM.

I used the zip-tie method, leaving the boot flush against the bottom of the shifter's clip device (ferrule? Doug, what's the proper term?); that way I can easily remove/swap the shifter if necessary. I don't mind seeing the part below the ball anyway.

Thanks guys. Do any of you know if the (replacement) shifter boots come with just the leather, or is it alread attached to the plastic ring?

I will post pics when the job is done.

Follow up w/pictures

Hi All,

I had the dealer install the HC accessories I ordered and the Whalen shift ****. I ended up going with the brushed, but asked Doug to polish the circle on top for a contrasting look. I love the feel of the **** and the installation appears to be rock solid. The shifter boot is attached to a plastic ring similar to the stock setup. I do not know how easily this went together. I also had them install some M7 STB's that look great. They managed to scratch the top of the strut towers with something, but nothing a little touch up paint didn't take care of.

All and all, I am thrilled with the outcome. Although pricey, the Whalen **** is so much better than stock!

First of all I LOVE my Whalen shift ****, and Doug is a great guy and fantastic to work with. As for the shift boot, mine has been just like yours, just staying up by itself. Until today I just did a quick little mod. I wrapped about 4 or 5 turns of friction tape around the shaft about 1/8" from the bottom of the shift ****.

Then I just pushed the plastic ring onto it, and it is staying put now. I used friction tape since unlike electrical tape, there is no glue to deteriorate over time.

Good thought. After about a week, the leather is starting to soften and its falling down the shaft just a little. I think I will follow suit and go with the tape method. There is nothing worse than a impudent shifter boot.

I'd like a Whalen, but can't afford it. Anyone moving to a better Whalen and want to sell the old one?

I do have a few 'blems' on hand, and I'd be happy to give you a super deal on one of them.
Once I get back to the shop (I'm in Denver at the moment), I'll PM you about the particulars, if you're interested.

I've used Doug's adaptors on my wooden *****. Never had a problem with the boot dropping down.

I believe that the OEM replacement boot does come with the plastic ring, but my memory could be flawed.

The Redline leather boots do not come with a plastic ring. You steal the one from the old boot.

Put the shifter in Neutral. Pull the **** straight off. A good tug will do it.

Some of the stock ***** are damn near impossible to remove. I tried repeatedly under different conditions and using different methods, to no avail. Finally I had the service guy at my dealer remove it for me.

Mine was tough, but the suggestion that we put it in 2nd with a leg on either side and use legs to help push as I pulled worked.
