Send me your email address via PM and I'll send a "How-to" for your grill and you won't be too nervous.

I used 3" wide vinyl tape on my headlight washers but I've been looking at how to remove them so I can spray 'em.

The Plasti-Dip lasts really well and this past weekend, I touched it up with Black Wow and it looks really, really nice. Mine has survived through the winter and that included lots of snow and ice, rain and all. I made it through the hottest part of last summer so the temps were in the mid 90's.

Good luck,
Craig

I have had my hl , tl, and boot handle done for about a year and the plasti dip is holding up well. the only thing is the headlight rings could be redone because of a couple of chips from rocks hitting them.

Hey, one thing I forgot to mention. I did go with the tape I mentioned in the how to and it's working great. Just ensure you don't stretch it when you are putting it on.

Hope the How To helps.

I plan on ordering the beltline vinyl strip from outmotoring, is that easy to put on?
Nothing against Aaron, but Lyle's beltline vinyl is much better quality than Outmotoring's

Hope everyone else is having as much fun as I have with this.

you guys make me miss Lloyd something terrible! I love my Pepper White JCW, but if (maybe when LOL!) I did it again it would be Laser Blue all the way!

Keep those pics coming guys!

That does stink, but it isn't very expensive to replace. Try to squeeze the edges of the clips with your fingers even, then pull out. I just go real slow and work my way around.

If it makes you feel better I broke like 6 the first time. Stupid me thought the snapping noise was them popping out!

Using a smaller sized flathead screwdriver works well. Your best bet is to pop out a few at the biggest side of the HL ring (side opposite turn signal side) and then you can slide the rest out with that extra room instead of having to pop them out.

Or

Use pliers to squeeze the metal clips and the flathead to pry them and they pop out easy that way too

Thanks for the quick replies. When you say to squeeze the metal clips, do you mean the black and chrome plastic clips? Squeeze those together and push up? Because I don't see metal ones.. ?

If that doesn't work I am going to borrow a smaller flathead from my friend and try that method. My flathead I guess was too big which caused the tab to break.

On a positive note, by tail light chrome pieces popped off easily and are being plastidipped right now!!

The black clips that you find under the hood are metal (at least on my 07 they are. Maybe they have been changed). Those clips also slide out so you could try sliding 1 or 2 toward the center of the HL ring and then the rest of the piece should come out.

Just curious... folks here seem to have had a lot of success with the Plasti-Dip for their black out projects. Has anyone tried any of the other colors for things like this? Just having some odd ideas about trying a 'white-out' effect on my BRG/White MC.

Not seen any plasti-white, but a good scuff, primer and quality white paint, would be PURRRFEECTTT! Best of luck and post up pics!

I don't know if it's the heat and humidity 100 degrees with like 40-50% humidity.(in which faq on plasti-dip's site says , do not use in high humidity), but i am having horrible luck getting my plasti dip smooth looking. I have done the gas cap like 3x's now and it always starts to bubble up kind of peach fuzz looking texture. Are you guys some how sanding it between coats?

My technique that so far is not working
1. clean chrome part with mineral spirits and then ammonia free glass cleaner
2. do not touch it with my fingers once clean
3. first coat, I hold the can 12-16" away and spray in strokes and lightly cover the chrome piece with a light coat
4. wait 30 minutes and come back and spray from 12" away and lightly cover the chrome piece again. This is when I see this peach fuzz type texture appear
5. wait 30 minutes and do the same thing as step 4.
6. come back and get pissed that it's all fuzzy and wonder if it's the heat and humidity here in texas
7 strip off plasti dip with mineral spirits and try again.

I am using the spray like i was spray paint anything else. Very smooth strokes not letting off the nozzle till I am past the piece i am painting during my stroke.

I would try a different can of the plastidip.
Out of the 5 cans I bought 1 of them had the same issue.
The newer cans seem to work better.

OK thanks, i bought all 4 of my cans from the same home depot. All the rest are out of plasti dip . Lowes by me doesn't carry it. I'll give this other bottle a try. My technique is correct right?

When I did my headlights, taillights, and gas cap it was a little cooler outside back in March. I know high humidity may make it bubble and shrivel up a little. I did my headlight washers on a different day and re-did my gas cap back in May and it was pretty hot out, not Texas hot, but pretty close. I put the pieces in my freezer to help cool them down and dry them. Also, I never waited 30 minutes, just use judgement. Don't stress too much over it, its very simple. Just spray and dry. I did like 2-3 coats, and everything is holding strong. G'luck

So I'd like to take this opportunity to provide a comprehensive DIY for any members interested in taking on this project with the same vehicle. Many members have already completed this project on their own and they look fantastic, so please provide help tips for the process!

Tools:
  • Small Phillips head screwdriver
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Needle nose pliers
DIY BLACKOUT HL & TL RINGS; GRILL SURROUND R56S
Step 1: Headlight Rings
  • Open bonnet
  • Place small flathead screwdriver between silver & black tab
  • Gently pry (push) away from you, towards the headlight hole
  • The chrome piece should literally pop off
  • Do not morph silver plastic tab

Step 2: Grill Surround
Top Grill
  • Remove 4 screws with Phillips head screwdriver
  • Use needle nose pliers to squeeze tip and gently push up & pull at same time
  • Repeat for rest
  • Try not to pull off/break tabs when pulling grill, use pliers wisely
Note* Use pliers to push more than squeezing, and push more than pulling

Bottom Grill
  • Use flat head screwdriver & pry out black screws from black honeycomb grill for more work space
  • While slightly pushing down, pull black grill out of its fitment, you can see its slots
  • If you’ve taken the whole grill off, you may gently pry or pull off the grill surround, this should ‘pop’ off as well.
  • The grill surround may be attached with a bit of glue, so apply pressure if needed

Step 3: Tail light Rings
  1. Take the very same flathead screwdriver and go between the tail light (lens) and ring – from the inside.
  2. Locate the tabs (3 on top) and gently pry away from you, do the same around
  3. This piece should pop off as well.
  4. Do the top first then push downward to take ring out of its place
Everything should pop right back in.

Blackout:
After wiping the chrome down with a paper towel and Windex, I laid the rings over newspapers and sprayed it with 2-3 coats of Plasti-Dip. You can research this aerosol at its website. I purchased it from The Home Depot in the spray paint aisle for $5.22. I used 2 full cans of it.
I did the same for the tail lights.

The grill surrounds may be tricky, I used some chopsticks and stuck them in my lawn like wooden stakes. Then I rested the grill surrounds on them so I can spray them from all angles. 2-3 Coats every 20-30 minutes. Do it on a windless day, wind makes the spray difficult to apply evenly.

This is an old thread, but some things are priceless. I figured out the tail and head light rings on my own, but the upper grill surround had me stumped. Did a quick search here and bingo. Thanks very much for posting this.

Jim

Well, I just did my passenger door handle. I was mostly successful. After taping and spraying, I used an exacto knife to cut around the edge of the tape to see if I could lift the tape without peeling the plastidip. It did peel in two spots and exposed some of the chrome. I sprayed some plastidip on some scrap paper and touched up the areas with a brush. It looks pretty good and we will see how it holds up with time. All in all, it took me about an hour...

It's not spray paint though.

When you have a few minutes, go over the directions on the can.....PD is totally different. Layers have to be applied within a certain time frame, and CANNOT be applied in direct sunlight. Find a shady cool spot like a garage or basement

Paint thinner or mineral spirits will remove the old stuff. I had PD on most of my chrome parts and it lasted almost two years until I just recently installed Aesthetic Creations molded flat black trim in it's place.
