Interior/Exterior DIY blackout HL & TL rings - grill surround R56S guide
Update on my black out.
So the bleach did not work as well as I had hoped.
Plan B: I have connections at a local plating shop, they were able to soak off the chrome in the nitric acid tank.
this worked very well, I have fresh plastic parts to lay down my paint. I had one part that the clips had broken off so I was able to test on this one first.
NOTE: best to remove all of the plastic tabs, I left the one that screws go into and they melted away, different kind of plastic.
I had to strip and repaint the headlight rings, I got in a hurry and the paint was not fully cured, left fingerprints. we finnaly have weather in the 70's so I am hoping to have finished in the next week.
The wife keeps giving me a bad time about my car missing parts and looking like crap.

Alright, so I dipped my grille today.
The top was very easy...remove the screws, pinch the tabs, easy out.
The bottom was not so easy. I tried pulling on just the chrome part after releasing the tab on either side, but it was pulling the grille with it. So I popped the 4 rivets on the grille (easy) and removed the entire grille (easy). I thought I could just tape off the grille part and spray the chrome....bad idea. Don't do this. After two coats and an hour, removing the tape removed about half of the paint on the grille. So, I had to remove the chrome part afterall. With a little bit of patience, a flathead screwdriver, and 10 minutes, I had it free and it was so much easier to paint.

Painting the chrome would take some serious prep, sanding, etching primer, etc. Adhesion would always be an issue IMO
Plasti Dip requires degreasing the piece and it STICKS. Easy to take off and chips would be easy to fix.

those that have done this can they report back on durability? how is it after 1 year in the sun, and being blasted by the sand on the road. also how is when washing/drying the car? does it leave black smudges? is it chipping/fading?
After 4 years posting this thread
For any one who's on the fence, I've touched up maybe once every two summers depending how bad the winter was.
It chips, but so does your car paint. So it requires infrequent touch ups that you can't necessarily with your exterior paint.
I can honestly say plastidip is a durable product for the exterior that requires little maintenance and can be removed at your convenience. The only hassle is removing your chrome accents with finesse.
It does not smudge, and washing is a breeze. Keep in mind it's meant for tool grip so if you try to clean with an abrasive, it'll cause friction.
I'll post pics soon of my 2 year old plastidip touch up.
After 3+ years, I've taken off my plastiDip headlight trim. It was looking rather beat up. It held up great over the years but the rock chips and salt and lack of upkeep did them in.
Taking it off was a breeze. If you have a spot where it's lifting, you can use a hose to get alot of it off. For the thinner hard to get off areas I used goo off or goo gone. Soak a rag, wipe the plastidip and off it comes. The chrome finish was left unharmed. Although, I did not leave the goo off sit or soak. The chrome looks great, like it was brand new but I will probably spray them again when I have time. If you're on the fence, try it. Just make sure you put lots of coats on so it's nice and thick (if you spray it under the sun, it drys very fast). If it's thick, you can peel it right off and won't need goo off. It is a very good product.
Note, I wouldn't use it on the gas cap. If you live in a state where they pump your gas, they'll get gas on it and it leaves a mark. I would probably do this over in the body color and not dipped.

No, I sprayed the whole thing and traced the "S" with a blade and pulled it off. I did the same thing with my emblems.
Looks good by the way!
Figured I'd show off mine a little as well. I had my first experience with plasti dipping this morning. Needless to say, I love this stuff.

I don't want to go overboard with this stuff, but I'd like to do the chrome strip on the trunk lid, as well as the chrome strip in the lower grill.
