>>What reviews? A friend called from NYC saying it was a BAD night.
Yup, it was a bad night. You know, you try so hard but the cards just don't fall.

Hey, the top four are good. If you pick another type of music it could be different.
The song selection and the costumes are all up to the contestants.
Win or loose they can't complain to anyone but themselves.

Those phone lines are jammed. Time for a new phone.
A friend told me that not all phones get through equally well.
Some are more successful for no apparent reason.

Maybe so. It's been happening every week since Jennifer Hudson was voted off. Consider that there were too many Divas so they could be splitting that segment of the population that prefers that type of performer.

Consider too that all of the top four are strong and that a given single performance is not a dream breaker.
AI is all about being talented enough and getting votes. The best singer is not always the winner as we have seen before so don't get the wrong idea when Latoya left tonight. She will be back and she is a solid class act. Her only short coming is that in being so good you really feel that when she gives a performance it ought to be outstanding every time which is wasn't always. My kids call her "boring" albeit good singing. When I listened to Latoya on the AI season 3 CD I was not taken with her vocals as much as with some of the other singers. But it is only one song and perhaps it is because we have seen better from Latoya so we know better.

Consider that John Stevens had a huge following and so did George Huff. Who did those voters shift their vote to? Diana? Or someone else. Hard to say. It was a big voting population. Would they simply give up when their idol got voted off? Not sure what happened.

Then there is the idea that what simon says, some people want to prove wrong. He can be blunt and honest but I wonder if people are put off by his lack of tact. He could say, "I know you can do better and I wish you did." Or he can say "pack your bags".

So how could such a good singer like Latoya get voted off this week? Simple. Not enough votes. If her supporters were not working those phones for the full two hours and doing everything they could to keep her on another week then they are the ones to blame, not those who tried their best for the three other singers that they were supporting.
Why did Fantasia make it? Was her singing better than Latoya's? Nope, she just got the votes. Judges don't vote.
America votes.

There is no doubt that some of the contestants have a broad base and active followers. I can tell you that it was pretty darn hard to get a phone line last night when calling. This might discourage a casual voter but not those that are hardcore. When the going gets tough the tough get tougher. Lets hope each singer earns their spot by singing well every chance they get. They've got to know that being at the top for each is already a great place to be and being voted off is not the end but only the beginning of the next phase. Afterall, 11 of the top 12 will be "voted off".

So if you didn't like the outcome then get out and vote. Otherwise you'll be left scratching your head

The newspaper says Hawaii attempted 5 million calls (with a population of a bit over 1 million that means those 5 phones per household were active thanks to Simon's comment) and completed 1.32 million. Text messaging was not in that total.

Some interviews were interesting. Simon said he thought the competition was fickle, that Latoya's performance lacked the winning edge, and that Latoya's comment about "all the singers being winners" might not have helped her.
He talked to Jasmine backstage and told her "it's OK a better singer left... you got more votes and that is AI".

Randy Jackson was interviewed and said it was "crazy". He said twice now a stronger singer was voted off this season, Jennifer Hudson and Latoya. In the end he thought the difference was Hawaii's vote.

There are other articles mentioning that Jasmine has strong support across the country from the younger crowd, asian and pacific islanders, alumni of her high school Maryknoll, etc. Hawaii is pretty small and every one is interconnected by only a few orders.

This afternoon Jasmine is back in Hawaii and will be at the state capitol to get a proclamation from the lt. gov Duke Aiona and be on KHON TV live tomorrow from 630 to 730am.

I'm sure the producers are liking the controversy and shocking results because a competition with the winners already known would be quite boring. I missed the entire AI season 2.

From idolonfox.com
MONDAY SPECIAL PROGRAMMING NOTE
Don't miss an all-new special featuring the final three Monday night at 8/7c on FOX. Ryan will sit down with the judges one on one to learn what they think about this season, and then Diana, Fantasia and Jasmine will sing one song each!

Jasmine made it back to Hawaii for a day. The lt.governer proclaimed yesterday Jasmine Trias Day in Hawaii.
She'll be leaving today to get back to rehearsals- three songs for next week and she joins Clive Davis from Arista Records who worked with Whitney Houston to find the best songs for her.

More on Clive Davis-
http://www.law.harvard.edu/alumni/bu...ature_3-1.html
http://www.askmen.com/men/business_p...ive_davis.html

How much difference does Hawaii AI vote make? Less than you think. Some stats.
Each week there are some 20 to 25 million calls.
According to Verizon, last week Hawaii attempted 5 million and completed 1.32 million but not all were for AI, that is the total calls for that 2 hour time period. It doesn't take into account text messaging and AT&T wireless calls.

Hawaii's population is 1.25 million. Hawaii's calls topped New Jersey's calls by some 24,000 even though NJ population is 7 million. Only New York and California had more calls than Hawaii. But Hawaii people and their families are all over the country and very active telling other to vote so the population isn't always an indicator of voting power.

Today the newpaper had some theories on why Jasmine did so well last week-
1- She is very attractive and looks like an american idol
2- Teens like her and are strong voters
3- Hawaii people like her-esp those from Maryknoll school and from Mililani
4- She has a strong ethnic following-Filipinos/pacific islanders across the US are very supportive.
5- People vote opposite of Simon's reviews
6- People don't like mean judge critiques
7- People don't vote only on the last performance but also on the desire to hear that singer again next week
8- People who voted for other singers choose to support her rather than the other singers

This week each contestant sings a song of their choice, a song selected by the judges and a song selected by Clive Davis.
It should be good because a common critism is that song selection is key to doing well. I think this will be a good week.
Stay tuned.

I think Hawaii got it's fix of Jasmine Trias the last 48 hours. She was busier and more in demand than when the president visits.

From today's newspaper-
http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/ar.../ln/ln05a.html
Her classmates from Maryknoll School

Thousands showed up to greet her-
"I cannot believe this," Trias said to her screaming fans. "I mean, look at how many people are here. Thank you so much for all your support. ... You're a big part of my life."
She packed a full schedule into her less than 48-hour stay. She was at KSSK doing a radio interview by 6 a.m. and by 8:15 she made it back to visit her Maryknoll family, where more than 600 screaming students and faculty greeted a tearful Trias with dozens of signs and banners welcoming her back.

Segment producer Simon Lythgoe described the frenzy he has experienced with Trias.
"I had the privilege of going back to Clay Aiken's hometown at this time last year and he had good response," Lythgoe said. The response in Hawai'i, he said, was "1,000 times" greater. "I've never seen a response like this anywhere."

Jasmine meets with a fan at the Mayor's Ceremony setting May 14 as Jasmine Trias Day.

While monday night was OK.
Tuesday night was not a good one for Jasmine.
I thought Fantasia did a solid job-her problem is getting enough votes to stay alive. She's been in the bottom two at least three times but not from a lack of singing talent or performance jitters.

We'll see how America votes tonight. It was really hard to get through the phone lines. Someone must be tying a knot on my line outside my home or maybe everyone else in my area is also calling and I can't get out- not a far cry from the truth since Jasmine lives in my area.

Over 6 million attempts by Hawaii on Verizon and 1.6 million calls completed not including text messages and AT&T wireless calls.

Tickets go on sale this saturday for the Sept 2 day concert by the AI On Tour show. Should be good to hear them in Hawaii LIVE. We will rock the house down.

As for the three songs Jasmine sung.
When the outcome is not as good you wonder how good your song selection is.
I agree that singing the Whitney Houston song to open is full of problems. You have to cover it and sing at least as good as the release version when that song is known by so many and so well.
Next Paula did right to choose an upbeat song but not Mr. Melody by Natalie cole. Jasmine covered it but it seemed out of place and didn't match her so she had trouble connecting with the audience. It was OK.
The Clive Davis's pick of All by myself potentially had promise but I don't know if a better ballad could have been picked that was more upbeat and not so down. Is he picking that to foreshadow the results of the voting?

I thought the song selections for the other contestants was much better but they also covered those songs well so props to them for nailing those tunes.

Maybe Jasmine was away too long in Hawaii and distracted and tired from all the weeks and travel.
Stay tuned tonight for more AI.

Jasmine's run for the AI finish is over. But it was fun while it lasted and I'm sure she will continue to develop and get better. Pretty good for a high school senior.

Well, not much left next week. Not much suspense left. It'll be interesting to see what happens next week to those 6 million calls attempted this week.

Aloha Jasmine

Here's a recap of the many articles this season for the Hawaii contestants-
http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/cu...l/americanidol

Good luck to both Camile and Jasmine- we'll see them both on Sept 28/29th in Hawaii's AI concert.

Tickets for the Hawaii concert on sale this saturday at 9am. Lines form from 7am and lottery numbers will be handed out at 8am. Limit of 8 tickets on sales per person. $48 plus service charges if any.

No I didn't stand in line.
No I didn't get tickets.
Yes, I knew they were going to sell out. But quick.
The line (are you there?)

http://starbulletin.com/2004/05/23/news/index2.html
Quote-
Two "American Idol" shows, featuring the finalists from the Fox television show performing live, sold out in four hours yesterday, a record pace for a Blaisdell Arena event, and faster than any other show on the 52-city nationwide tour.

Of 12,000 tickets available for Sept. 28 and 29 shows, "99 percent were sold out at 10:45 this morning," said Barbara Saito, general manager of Tom Moffatt Productions, which is promoting the Honolulu shows.

"There were a bunch of single seats here and there, but now they're all gone," she said at 1 p.m.

Interesting article about Idol mania Hawaiian style.

Next stop? The live AI concert in sept.

I can't believe Diana is in the final two. She wasn't even good enough for the top 12! And Jasmine...it's about time. She should have been number 9 or 10, NOT 3 (sorry Hawaiians)!

They really need to change the voting method next year. I'd like to see us vote for the WORST contestant each week. That would be a step in the right direction. Although with all the big money in internet gambling nowadays who knows if they can fix it...

Diana and Fantasia are in the final two for good reason. They got more votes each week than the rest. Simple as that.
It does not have anything to do with "good enough" at singing. If you can sing, try doing it live in front of 30 million viewers and just about half the people in your state watching every week, week after week while rehearsing, doing video segments for the shows, and going to school. It's not an easy task for anyone in high school.

>>They really need to change the voting method next year. I'd like to see us vote for the WORST contestant each week. That would be a step in the right direction.

As far as the producers are concerned I don't think they have any reason to change the voting rules. Sure it would be nice if there was a limit of one call per phone number but how are you going to keep track of that? Sure it would be easy to charge for voting but that would bias people with the means to vote more.

The rules are clear. Those who remain are judged by the public and remain from week to week based on the votes they can get. If you can sing the best and not get enough votes then you're going to be on the bubble to survive. Obviously there is more to it to getting votes besides singing.

In all fairness I have seen and heard Jasmine and Camile sing better than on the AI show Live. Each week every contestant has to try their best to look and sound the part. I'm sorry if you are unimpressed. I cannot say that I thought the last few weeks were as strong as they could have been. No excuses just the facts.

Every singer has their fans and Hawaii sold out their two AI Live shows in about 4 hours which is the fastest sellout in the history of Hawaii concerts and also the fastest sell out of all AI concerts on this tour. Tells you something about how Hawaii feels about Jasmine and Camile.

Last saturday the AI live tour tickets were selling for $48 each with a small fee.

Today when I looked them up at ticketsnow.com I find them going in BB section for $355 each!
http://www.ticketsnow.com/search/res...?prodid=198631

That's a tidy profit for someone that bought up to 8 tickets.

I watched last night as Fantasia won the AI crown this year.
She worked hard to earn it. Good for her but she did look exhausted by half way through the show. Good to see the final 12 again.
I didn't think that Kelly and Reuben sang all that well live.
Now I can do normal stuff on tuesday and wednesday nights.

sorry for bringing back this dead thread....but I went to the AI concert tonight (yes, I'm officially a dork) and it was awesome (if you didn't believe me the first time about officially becoming a dork, this should have sealed the deal). Camile was great...much better than Jasmine IMHO...and the rest of them (including John Stevens) really performed well. Rather enjoyable experience I must admit.

however, you know you're old when you go to a concert sponsored by Pop Tarts!

Hey, Pop tarts are an American institution.
Plus they taste good when you are really hungry and desparate

Was it full? Sold out?

Well, I thought of going to the AI concert but watching on TV for all those weeks were enough for me. I could tell from before that Camile was good and had lots of potential. She just didn't do as well live on the show but she also didn't have all the exposure early on in life like Diana and Jasmine had.

After touring the country for the last few months and doing lots of concerts this is the end of the road for now so you'd expect some pretty polished performances if not some pretty tired performers.

Tonight is the last show. Anybody going?
