LIDAR Ticket question

Got popped for 37 in a 25 the other day- LIDAR ticket, arghhh!! Strange thing is, my Passport 8500 didn't make a sound. It's screamed laser at me several times before, and it's still going off for x, k, and ka bands all the time. I was less than 100 yds from the cop when he shot me so my theory is that he aimed low (license plate or headlight) and my dash mounted detector didn't see the beam because it was below the detector and so narrow at that short distance. Does this sound possible, or do I have a defective unit? The other times I've gotten laser readings, the cops have been quite a distance away.
Maybe it's time for an upgrade, but too late- it really stings, to have a several hundred dollar piece of gear let me down

Not much you can do with lidar - pencil thin beam. Even the Valentine just let's you know you just earned a ticket.

Sorry but thats incorrect. Not quite pencil thin, the beam is 1 meter wide at 250 meters away...my valentine one picks up radar whenever it being shot around me, ex. Car in front of me is being hit.

Any ticket with lidar shot at over 1,000 feet is pretty easy to beat...check out that forum!!!

Remember, I was less than 100 yds from the gun, a far cry from 250 meters, so again, I theorize that the beam was still VERY narrow. I've seen laser alerts when I wasn't being directly painted from long distance, and some when I was, not ticketed in those cases though I was well over the speed limit. I dropped buckets of speed pronto each time, so maybe that helped. I sure hope I'm right about a narrow beam- would rather that than have a useless piece of technology.
I wonder if even a laser jammer would have worked at such close quarters. I've been thinking about getting one, since they're not illegal here in Oregon.

This kind of clever I expect from the guy holding the radar gun.

At 225ft the beam is 8.1in wide. If you want real LIDAR protection then a jammer is your best option (to get advance warning and adjust accordingly). Laser at that range with no countermeasures is pretty difficult not to get read right away.

I've had multiple advance alerts, the V1 does a great job of picking up scatter and bursts that hit the vehicle in front of me, also the V1 gives a warning as soon as the laser hits the car, the beam has to travel back to the gun, and it takes a few waves, at 250ft yeah this all happens in about half a second, but a handheld unit at 1000ft takes some time to lock on. I've also gotten the why did so much speed bleed off between readings look. The V1 is about SA and it gives it to you, it's picked up a beam from within 50ft. I'd certainly expect notification from 200+ft.

There were no other cars around- I was his only target, so no advance alert from someone else being painted. A beam of around 8" could have gotten below the detector, I suppose. What does SA refer to?

I'm no expert, but given that light travels at 299,792,458 m / s I can't see
how it would take 1/2 second to travel 250ft, even 500.

I should have qualified my statement. If you're traveling alone and you get lidared, you stay lidared.

I suppose if he's bouncing around and holding down the trigger, you may get some warning. And yes, they can screw up, etc.

Situational awareness, laser can get you and miss with the narrow beams, however the V1 sensor is sensitive enough that it doesn't take a direct hit. Also having a rabbit is very beneficial

active jammer is what you can do. it's not illegal if it has another use (like a parking sensor)

I expect that it's not easy to hold taht beam still on passing vehicles. That's why they are usually pulled over on the side of the road holding it against the door out the window. If he jiggles just a little, at 100 or 200 yards the beam will be playing all across the scene. In fact, that would make a great demonstration in court, using one of those small pen lasers.

I was once lasered cresting a hill on my way to a rally. I was the only car around, but the V1 warned me as soon as it happened and I saw him hidden up ahead in direct line of sight. Luckily I had just decided to do the speed limit as I was getting up the hill, since I was running early. They say God loves fools and children, and I stopped being a kid a long time ago.

A little pricey, but might be cheaper than a few tickets...

I got out of one about 15 years ago because the detector DIDN'T go off. A cop pulled me over and while he was stopped behind me my radar detector went off. When he told me that he'd clocked me on radar at 15 over the limit I replied "That's a neat trick since you just turned it on after you pulled me over." He then told me that I shouldn't have a radar detector since "it's just a way to break the law" and got back into his car.

True, but you also need to factor the time it takes for the gun to confirm and calculate the speed, they send out several pulses and using computer software to determine the ones that hit the car vs the ones that missed on top of all of it, it's not an "instantaneous" reading for the operator, so if he is like most and clocks you a few times (makes his case all that much stronger) then you typically get a chance to bleed off a little bit of your speed. Just getting it to lock on (operator has to steadily hit a moving target) to one car @ 1000ft (typical range, beam is already 3 ft wide) can take a few seconds, before it gets enough info to get you the speed, all the while shooting the laser down the freeway for detectors to pickup.

It works one way on paper a whole different way in real life. there is more to it than just light traveling.

I'm just speaking from experience. Awhile ago I came within 1 point of loosing my license for a few years. Needless to say, I've changed my ways and have nothing but advice against speeding. Nobody wants to have their license cut up.
