Laser Interceptor install: part I (and II)

Just installed the front sensor head of the Laser Interceptor parking aid and laser jammer. Google it and check radardetector.net for more info.

Accessing the firewall is so easy in R56. Thanks Bor, djam43 and others for the tips. I just fished it through this grommet and the wire appeared in the footwell:

Removed the grille for some dremelling. Thanks shokk for the instructions:

Mounted the CPU in the passenger footwell:

Grille shots:

Switch (the button and lights on the side are my Escort Smartcord install):

Thanks to tips from this community, it was an easy install.

When I get the slim head for the rear, I'll post part II.

Edit: I added part II later in the post.

Did you ever get the slim head for the rear?

only one is needed from our testing with the LI's cousin, the LPP. I'd assume it's the same. Now, if you have chrome everywhere, two would be better, but the MINI has a small frontal area, meaning it's tough to get enough separation on the two.

I wish someone would work these into a license plate frame - would make install 1000x easier, especially for the rear.

From the look of the pix at the site, two was needed for a wider car like a lambo. The mini should be good with one over the plate.

No one has tested a one-head setup with the laser interceptor. I have faith, but I do plan on testing in the spring. I have a cheap video camera and mount in the car ready for some real encounters.

Here's my rear install of a single regular LI head. I screwed it directly to the license plate as another mini owner did, and then I fitted a cheap plastic frame around. It's off center so I can access the hatch release button.

Anyone yet had their A** kicked by the LEO whose Laser went crazy after pointing it at your car? It seems to be the only downside I see with this technology!

i have read of someone in th uk getting arrested for using one. it's not technically illegal in my state and most others, though, it is an "obstruction to justice". haven't heard of anyone really getting their a** kicked.

anyway, it doesn't make the gun go crazy, usually not even an error message since the jammers send specific counter pulses that match the gun used. if you turn it off after you slow down, the leo will take a little longer but still get a reading and probably won't think twice about it. some vehicles have naturally tougher front profiles to get a quick reading anyway.

there's some daring videos of people making multiple passes past an LEO jamming all the way to gun. i don't plan on doing that. i'm still waiting for my first real encounter.

if you're interested, check out radardetector.net for videos and info.

Your source's price is pretty high, and The Escort one is the highest rated of the ones tested so far for about $600. I think that is 2 for front and 1 for the rear. I am considering it, right now I just did a trip with cruise control set on 70 MPH, tired of tickets!

check out radardetector.net for some interesting info. there's a lot of options now. IMHO, the escort's new jammer or "shifter" does poorly, especially compared to others with "laser diode" versus "led" technology. one thing going for escort is that it is a "big", established company. i think the laser interceptor is the best performer of the bunch, though. even it's one head will probably outperform the escort's two, and two laser interceptor heads up front will be invincible if properly installed.

anyway, i recommend waiting for the next GOL (Guys of Lidar) test that will compare all the new jammers. should be anytime soon.

The mini probably doesn't need it, but I upgraded to a quad setup any way, two heads in front and two in back. Gotta wear shades.

Hello everybody,

I am bringing this post back because i am about to make an installation on my R53.
As you may know laser jammer is not so much appreciated in Europe... So my installation will have to me very very stealth...
I would like to know if someone has made a stealth installation on his car for LI or any other jammer?
For the back i was thinking about installing one sensor in the rear fog light, as i never use it... what do you think?

Cheers,

Jonath

Jonath, my box should be arriving in the next couple of days and I'll be doing as much "stealth" as possible with the install since the place that I live is the same. Although I'm installing in an R55, it's still the same concept.

I've got a quad light bar on the front and I'll be putting the detector heads between the light bar and the bumper so they aren't out in the open. I'm not going to run a rear head for now as the local LEO's simply don't seem to run LIDAR speed traps in my area. I will keep my eye out for someone selling their 8.8 or higher heads when they upgrade and then I'll put one or two on the rear.

I saw a "how to" from a guy that installed the heads inside the light fixtures on his BMW so I'm willing to bet you could get away with installing the rear head in the rear foglight as you mention with little problem at all.

Make sure you upload pics when you do your install - I'll so the same.
