Did anyone but me notice how little damage the MCS showed after driving through the metal wall?

From SPEED.com

SPEED’s Peter Windsor contributed to a major delay on Sunday morning at Spa after crashing a Mini Cooper in a support race.

Following a nudge on the entry to the fast left before the Bus Stop corner the F1 guru lost control after a getting onto a wet curb and attempting to stay on line rather than taking to the run-off. He was shot over to the left, where he had a heavy head-on impact with the barrier.

Alarmingly a lengthy section of barrier was badly damaged, and Windsor’s car actually struck the debris fence behind it. Windsor, who was wearing a HANS device, was unhurt, and the car escaped relatively lightly. As he walked back from the scene he received an ovation from the soggy Belgian fans.

Although the barrier absorbed a lot of the impact, he noted: “I wouldn’t want to have that accident in an F1 car.”

Shortly afterwards former DTM star Kurt Thiim had a spectacular roll, and the race was stopped. Officials had to spend a considerable amount of time repairing the barriers at both sites, although Windsor had done more damage.

The second GP2 race, due to start at 10am, eventually started at 11.10am. Fortunately for Peter heavy rain meant the start would in any case have been late, so he won’t be getting a bill for the trouble he caused…

KIMI: YAY! No driver could be more deserving of this year's championship!

Alonso: Go Fred! Best new talent out there: Great skills, wonderful attitude, an awesome team effort behind him, and very good fortune.

Sato: It looked like a mistake to me - it was WET, after all!

PIZZONIA : WTF?! Sato gets a 10 position grid penalty next race for a driver error RACING against Schoolmarm, while PIzzo's out there on dry tires fighting a non-existent race with JP, and takes him out of 2nd place!

Where is the justice? Oh the humanity! (Oh wait... it's just a sport.)

Anyway, great drives by great drivers today. An interesting, but frustrating Spa.

_Dave_

PS: Peter Windsor in a MINI - excellent!

F1.....what can I say about SPA..

MacLaren... what a race!!..until the s__pid Pizzonia gets Montoya.
The 1-2 finish for them it's always been out of luck. The best team out there today, great cars, probablly the best two drivers but the worst luck.

Renault.. well you have the Luckiest driver who ever exists(alonso)
backed up for a great team effort and a very conservative strategy that
is making the races just a bit boring...

Ferrari... though one. It's amazing that after six years of perfection and attention to detail..they just drop the ball and things don't seem to work.
Not sure that Felipe Massa is going to suit the team.. we'll see..

The japanese teams are getting better, Butoon is driving very well..he should of gone to ferrari instead of Massa, or maybe he is too good to be wasted as Schumi's b_tch.

Now to everybody who races in F1. be carefull out there, there are yellow cars with careless drivers ...and again there are Pizzonias who try to find races where there are none...at least for them..

Just a true fan opinion.

Pizzonia had switched to dry tires and was rocketing through the field, just like Button and Webber. He was trying to unlap himself from Montoya when they got together, it's too bad the TV didn't catch it.

If Alonso wins the drivers title, he 100% deserves it. Alonso is blindingly quick, has great racecraft, and is uterly relentless. The Renault is the quickest reliable car on the track. Yes, the McLaren is faster but it is unreliable. To win the championship, you have to have a smart, fast driver, a reliable car, and some luck. Renault has all three! If Kimi was 25 points ahead, he would be racing conservative as well. That's what smart race drivers/teams do. I hope Alonso can lockup the title at the next race.

All that being said, McLaren will dominate next year if they can find reliability!

Viva Alonso!

I still love Ferrari. And after watching an F-1 car work out in Maranello for an hour or so last fall followed by a 430...life was good in Italy.

No more HP for Sir Williams

From vnunet.com:
HP slams brakes on Formula 1 sponsorship
Five-year relationship with BMW Williams ended without explanation

Robert Jaques, vnunet.com 14 Sep 2005
HP announced today that it is ending its sponsorship of the BMW Williams F1 team at the end of the 2005 racing season.
The technology firm gave no reason for the decision to pull out, stating only that now is the "natural moment for HP to conclude our relationship".

HP will continue as principal sponsor of the team until the completion of this year's season, and will work closely with the team to pursue the best results possible as the season closes in Brazil, Japan and China.

"This has been a successful global branding property and an excellent technology partnership for HP," said Cathy Lyons, executive vice president and chief marketing officer at HP.

Sir Frank Williams, principal of the BMW Williams F1 team, added: "HP has made an important contribution over the past six years, in particular establishing a technology base and IT approach for us which we believe has put us at the forefront of F1 teams in this respect."

HP has been the principal sponsor and technology provider to the BMW Williams F1 team since 2000.

Sir Frank is just sweeping out the debris left by Carly Fiorina. New world, new rules!

Viva Williams-Cosworth, Que Viva!

p.s. note to MEB: I spent an afternoon in Maranello back in 1998, watching Eddie Irvine practice his F1 maneuvers too. Great memory from Italy.

USGP at Indy for 2006

Here's an interview regarding the USGP at IMS next year:

excerpt...

Q: What are your attendance expectations for 2006?

JC: The response from fans wanting the event to continue has been strong. Their message has been, “If there is going to be a USGP, it needs to be at Indianapolis.” So, we are expecting a successful 2006 USGP.

Q: How does IMS intend to promote the 2006 event after the events surrounding the 2005 race?

JC: Shortly after the 2005 race was underway, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway staff begun focusing its efforts on making sure the fans were being considered in the aftermath of that race. Hopefully, the fans have noticed our efforts. By all indications they have. Regarding the promotion of the 2006 race, IMS has always been creative in its marketing of the event. Our Pit Walkabout is now being modeled by other F1 tracks. We will continue raising the awareness of the sport in the U.S. media. Our ticket prices remain the cheapest on the entire F1 calendar, so we do many things right. It is a challenge, though. We need the cooperation of the entire Formula One community. Drivers need to do more. A top Formula One driver has had an open invitation to be on “The Late Show with David Letterman” show for the past three years. That driver will not do the interview. The parameters in which we must work regarding the U.S. media are also a challenge. So, we will do the best we can working within the constraints placed on us by the FIA and FOM. Also, with the cooperation of Michelin, account holders who renew their 2005 ticket order will receive two free tickets to next year’s race. Michelin is funding 20,000 free tickets.

Q: How important is it to IMS to have American Scott Speed in the new Red Bull Junior team, putting an American on the F1 grid for the first time since 1993 at a time that it appears IMS needs an American to draw fans back to the USGP?

JC: Having Scott Speed or any American in the USGP field would help raise the interest level of the event. Having an American in the series consistently is more important for the long run. We hope Scott is just the beginning of that much-needed trend.

Q: July 4th weekend traditionally is big for family travel, family cookouts at the lake, etc. Why is this a better date for IMS than the late June date? JC: July 4th is also a traditional big racing weekend. The IRL IndyCar Series has had a very successful event at Kansas Speedway the past several years, and the Daytona race is also a big, traditional event. So, the USGP fits nicely into the Fourth of July weekend. On a side note, the July 2 date allows the IMS staff a few more weeks to transition from the Indianapolis 500 to the United States Grand Prix.
So who's going?!

Carly Fiorina was the debris.

HP inherited the Williams sponsorship from its ill-fated purchase of Compaq. I was a bit surprised that HP stuck with it for as long as they did. I at least have to give them credit for that during what was otherwise a period of some pretty sad management decisions.

OK Boys! Here's the skinny on the '06 USGP

Got my Michelin refund today in the mail. Face value of all my tickets in a check from Eduard and Co., thankyouverymuch (Now if they'd just fire Mad Max!!) The deal on the 20,000 freebies for '06 is this. If existing customers sign up for next year's USGP (tentatively set for JULY 2, 2006) Bibendum and friends will give you additional tickets of the $85 grand stand seat variety absolutely free. In my case, I was offered two free seats for renewing the four I already subscribe to. 'Course I'd now have two extra seats beyond what I need, and in a different grand stand but, c'est la vie, as they say in the land of pneus.

Any restrictions about you selling them? Or do they require you to give them to someone else ... there may be a lot of eBay tickets for sale some time!

Nothing mentioned about what to do with the extra tickets. I suppose your summation that ebay will have a run on them will be well founded. I'll probably give my extras to a friend and his wife who've "always wanted to go to a GP" but never found the time / $$ for it. (i.e. I'll do my $0.02 worth to bring new fans to F1 and help to un-tarnish its image in the States).

Thanks for the ticket skinny...on with Brazil!

After 11 years, they still love their Ayrton Senna in Brazil...

The Alonzo championship scenario for Brazil:

+ Alonso finishes on the podium, whatever the result of Raikkonen
+ Alonso 4th or 5th and Raikkonen does not win
+ Alonso 6th or 7th and Raikkonen does not finish better than 3rd
+ Alonso 8th and Raikkonen does not finish better than 4th
+ Alonso out of the points and Raikkonen does not finish better than 5th.

OK, hands in the air of those that care that I posted that info...

Montoya...

Ooh, a F1 thread. Lemme catch up...

While I have to admit that the past year or so Montoya seems to have learned how not to hit things with his car anymore, I''ve watched F1 for too long not to remember how many times HE was the source of the accident that too many times took out a competitor too. I think racing Karma will require him to be knocked out of a race a few more times to balance the scales.

Especially galling was the Monaco incident. EVERYONE check brakes under yellow. Sure Schuey did it in the tunnel. So what? It's easy to go fast if you just hit stuff instead of using your brakes. Heck, I could drive a F1 fast and crash . It's the not crashing part that takes talent.

Reminds me of how everyone (in the media at least) is hailing Danica Patrick as some kind of star. She hit a guy under yellow and knocked him out of the race! When Kevin Cogan spun and knocked A.J. senior years and years ago he was rightly scorned and clearly in way ovver his head. But Danica is pretty and willing to sell it, for a series that is wishing it had the following of NASCAR. ( I don't follow NASCAR) So shes a star, because they say so.

So, do we think the tire battle will even up with two major teams moving to Bridgestone next year? More balanced testing etc?

COOPERation is that Alain Prost in that picture? He wasn't much of a Senna-hugger back in the day! And thanks for the stats although I'm sure we'll be reminded ad nauseum Sunday. "If the race ended now...."

If the race ended now I'd want my damn money back.....it's lap 6!!!

Prost was not a Senna hugger, until Senna's demise. He made a pledge in Senna's honor that he would never race F1 again and he did keep his promise although he has done some testing.

I also haven't seen his name mentioned in the Old Fat Bald Guy Formula One Series either.
