I am now a JCW Owner

I finally bit the bullit. after a close call with an absolutely sweet 1 of 31 Racecraft Mustang. i decided on the Mini. I flew to pick it up.. Its dark silver, its biggest option for me was the Mini Hi Fi. Other then that its a stripper. I drove it back trying to vary the RPMS and making frequent stops on the way back..She averaged 31.5 MPG on teh way back.. not bad for engine with now only 500 miles. I will(reluctantly) follow break in rule under 4000 RPM until that 1500 mile mark .. I will change the engine oil myself at 1500-2000 miles for the first one and then maybe every 5-7k, Somewhere around 5000 miles for good measure change the transmission fluid.. alittle overkill but cleaner is better in my book.then regular intervals after that.

all the advice has been appreciated. I guess a name change is in order for me and a cool new avatar will be required.

Happy Motoring

do it at 3,000 miles.

I would suggest changing the oil at 3,000 miles and then after the first oil change you can drive it like you stole it. If you change the oil to soon the oil will be to smooth and not allow the engine to brake in properly if at all. The first oil needs a little grit to seat the rings etc. These engines are pretty well made to go at least 10 or 12 thousand miles before changing the oil but I would think 3,000 would be enough to really mate all of the moving parts. I waited till 3,000 miles on mine to run it up through the gears. You will absolutly love the power of your JCW. But have a little patience because you do not want to glaze the clutch running it to hard before it sets itself in. Brakes are also something you want to take it easy on when brand new. If I were you I would take it easy for the first 3,000 miles.

Congrats n the new JCW. It is a blast. I have over 8500 miles on mine now and will get it to the track for its first time in a few weeks.

I took a similar approach to break-in (except tranny fluid), and that's just fine. The oil change at 1500 ended up being unnecessary. The oil that came out looked fine, but I guess it's worth it for peace of mind. I did another change at 7500. After the first 1200 miles you can start increase performance gradually and go all out after a few more hundred miles. The brakes work great out of the box especially if you bed them in.

Take the claim about taking it easy on engine, clutch, and brakes for a full 3K miles with a grain of salt. Not sure where that came from but I've never seen that advice for any BMW or MINI before. It doesn't come from MINI/BMW.

I am pretty sure i will never drive it on a track, but me and it will be going to the autobon next year. "Where its run what you brung." lol

I am sure there is some truth there on oil change but i will most likely do it because i will be bored.. I will hit the Sport Mode today with 500 miles..
I read a post about a few days ago... Actually it is arguable to say if you run your car in sport mode it will break in sooner... the logic is that button boost torque and thus more power ,heat and friction(lol)..Friction then will help the rings seat sooner etc...
There is arguement for everything.. Im pretty sure i will only be keeping this car four years or less.. So i might as well be pounding on it already...

The sport button does nothing more than remap the throttle and tighten the steering ratio. It does not increase power. Using it has no adverse affect on break-in. I used it from mile zero.

There is a lot of B.S. out there about break-in. Who am I going to listen to? BMW/MINI -- who designed the engine and win industry awards every year for numerous engines they design and build for production cars & who provide the warranty -- or some guys on the internet who think they know better?

Congrats and welcome to the cult!!! Drink your Kool-Aid like a good boy now........

I tend to agree with RaceTripper.....I broke mine in like I stole it and had a couple track events on it before it ever rolled 3k miles. It's doing great, not burning any oil, brakes are great, and I get around 26-28mpg pounding in him around town and 35-37mpg on the highway at 75mph. I have a track event this weekend at BMP with 4500 miles on the clock. I've done this with my past two cars and they have done just fine.......use common sense and you (and she) will be fine.

She huh?? I see that a lot here......Am I the only one that got a boy????

Mine has neither gender nor name. When I say "atta boy" on the twisties, I'm talking about me.

I have a new fondness for corners now.. I just wish i lived near more of them. On my drive home from teh dealer, i found an unusually sharp on ramp and i decided to push it just a little bit and the only thing sliding was my body , seamed to hitting the drivers door,,, and i was wearing a seatbelt,,, This thing is like riding on rails.. Sure its not as quick as i would like but it corners beyond my expectations...

Mine is definitely male... just haven't named him yet. I'm thinking "Thor". I am sure he will act like Thor once I put a few more mods on it.

Now that you've bought one, you can ask for an admin to change your handle.

Lol... I know. I'm thinking of selling my [near] classic 560SL, which could probably bring enough coin to get a new Mini convert with little to none of our own money (depending on how good a wax job I give it, hahaha, kidding).

Signature modification is under "User CP" [control panel]. Or to help more, just Click here to edit your sig:

You bet. If you haven't already clicked the link in my sig, or clicked the pic, you'll see some fairly good ones; especially showing where the flaps controls the mud and where it does not.

Actually, I just remembered a thread I made having fun with it... click here. Tho, not really showing the rears in that set.

Hoping the other ones in my gallery if you click my sig pic are good enough. You can always click the link to my large full rez pics on each page to see them better. (ah, I see pic imgp0767 in my gallery shows the rears pretty well)

re-edit: Actually, there's a few more < here > that I didn't post in the Mini pic gallery, not wanting to post duplicates. Pic IMGP1213-2 probably displays the mud flaps the best. You can get to the full rez image to see the mudflaps better in my gallery. (click the photo then click the "get the original uploaded photo" link)

I may just get the flaps at the same time as the tire rotation. Very nice photos btw the way. You found some nice contrasting scenery. In two weeks or so i may be driving it from Charleston to San Antonio when i am sure it will be rock chip heaven... Hopefully I wont pick up too much road debris... Thanks for the Pic show
