Oil questions

0-20 is recommended on 2017 F55.. Does it have to be Euro version oil? Also, what is advantage of removing oil filter drain plug first over just removing entire housing in one shot? Thanks

The oil you pick should be BMW Longlife-01 and BMW Longlife-01 FE spec.

If you don't drain the oil filter housing first, it will dump a bunch of oil on you. There's an oil change how to in the How to section.

Yep you need to at least make sure it meets BMW’s requirements, hence the rating. I imagine it will end up being a Euro blend. There is endless debate over what the best oil is for our cars, but the consistent factor is the BMW LL-01.
I personally like using Liquid Moly, but opinions vary

The OP needs LL14FE (0W-20) not LL01 (0W-30)
He has a 2017 .

LL01 only comes 0w-30
LL14 is 0W-20

Hence my statement
The engine sticker will state which oil, as mine also says 0W-20

That might be true with MINI branded oil, but there are other brands of oil that at rated LL01 FE in 0W20

I know im resurrecting this thread but has anyone found a exact answer as to what oil should be used in the F56?

in threads like this people mention a TIS bulletin about them switching from 5W-30 to 0W-20
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...r-ll-14fe.html

The new oil is also mentioned in this thread by ECS tuning
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-30-a3-b4.html

thanks for the help
for reference I have a 2.0L 2015 Cooper S F56

thanks for the help
for reference I have a 2.0L 2015 Cooper S F56

To update I ended up contacting mini. Even for them it is a bit confusing as I ended up getting a call back for clarification/

BMW in general switched to 0W-20 in 2015

Since the F56 started in 2013 it initially shipped with 5W-30 starting in 2015 new ones started shipping with 0W-20. All 2016 and newer models should have shipped with 0W-20. Mini recommends switching to 0W-20 but if its lived its whole life with 5W-30 its fine. They do not recommend putting 5W-30 in one that shipped with 0W-20.

Hopefully this was helpful. Mini phone support was surprisingly prompt and nice to deal with.

The reason why I needed clarification is that different manuals say different things and some say both. I sought out an answer since all I found were vague references online. This was especially confusing for my car which was produced while they were changing over.
