After some research I've been running

Castrol 03037 EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil, 5 quart European Formula

Amazon Amazon

Is this is one of our best choices?

They state best synthetic money can buy.

How can you go wrong with that?

Manual states:
When selecting an engine oil, make sure that the engine oil has the viscosity grade SAE 0W-20. Alternatively, also engine oils with vis‐ cosity grades SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-20, SAE 5W-30, SAE 0W-40 or SAE 5W-40 can be used.

I use this:

MINI does not use Castrol any longer they switched to Shell.

For my MINI I use Motul 8100 X-Clean+ Engine Oil (5w-30) and always a OEM filter.

Amazon Amazon

I also change my oil every 4K because I run an Aquamist Meth kit spraying with a 1.0 jet with 100% VP M-1 Meth. Yes, I am tuned for it with dual maps on my ViPEC ECU.

Yup BMW / MINI does not care who makes the oil as they are all about who they can buy it from at the cheapest price in huge bulk qualities.

They all meet the same standards.

Yep just as long as it meets LL-01 and then MINI changed up the game with 2014+ FE+ and now offers a couple different weights. Made by Shell, Pennzoil branded ( hence all the BMW Pennzoil push), bottle in Houston from a new gas to oil conversion from all the info I have internally.

0w-40 Mobile1 Euro .. changed every 3-5k mi. I dont care much for dealer recommendations when their only concern is thinning my wallet.

Our 2015 3-door F56 with the 1.5 litre motor is off warranty now so I'm ready to start doing annual oil changes myself. The car is gently driven 4,000 miles per year on mostly short trips in a climate with no severe heat or cold temperatures. I will use an OEM oil filter but I'm not sure which oil to use.

The manual calls for BMW LL-01 and says up to one litre of API SM may be used if approved oil is not available. Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5w30 meets BMW LL-04 and sells for $60 for 5 litres around here. Castrol Edge 5w30 C3 that meets BMW LL-04 is about the same price.

Castrol Edge FFT full synthetic 5w30 meets API SN, SM, SL and SJ but not any BMW standard. It's on sale for only $33 for 5 litres. I don't want to risk motor damage to save $27 but with the driving we do will it really make a difference which good quality motor oil I use?

I used Mobil 1. Its just my brand of choice.
I'm honestly not sure what one needs to be BMW certified, but I'm guessing its more of a marketing/partnership thing. If anyone has good/technical information on the BMW standard, I'd definitely want to know what it really means.

I am using AMSOIL's 0W-40 European oil. Amazed at how much more quite and smooth it runs compared to what the dealer was using. Cold weather starts are much easier, too. https://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produ...-EA&zo=1203272

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up using Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5w30 which meets BMW LL-04. I found it on sale for $32. The oil change took me a couple of hours as I was figuring it out as I worked along. The two little hatches provided just enough access. The only wrinkle was that the new cartridge drain plug needs a Torx 55 bit which I don't have so I took a chance and reused the old one which needs a 13 mm socket.

Thanks also to hp79 in another oil change thread for the 4.25 litre oil capacity for the F56 motor.
