F55/F56 Standard radio
Here is what I learned from my MA today. I called and asked if my F56 was missing the special Y cable for the iPhone/iPod like I got with my Coupe and Countryman. He said that BMW has designed the USB connection to work just like on your computer, meaning it will charge and connect to the car computer/radio. I don't have first hand knowledge of this, just passing this on because I haven't tried it.
I tested both wife's iPhone 5S and my Android with the radio. They work perfectly well ONLY on the stored audio files because the radio sees the phones as 'storage' and not as smart phone. It won't play Pandora, Youtube, Netflix, or anything like that through the USB and, unfortunately, neither through it's bluetooth.
Also, the USB only puts out standard 1A juice so it'll be slow a slow charge for some large phones/tablets.

It will play Pandora if it is initiated from the iPhone. It even displays "Pandora" on the radio screen. If you use iTunes Radio, it also works and will display the artist and song, as if it was an actual file on your iPhone.
Bluetooth streaming audio is only included if you have MINI Connected. There is a Pandora app on MINI Connected, but not YouTube or Netflix.

I found I was able to use Connected (XL at least) with just a USB cable for my iPhone 5, but will also try it with a cable that has separate audio like the BMW Y cable to see if that's better. It doesn't stream when connected over USB.
post i put up a few weeks ago to solve the playing music portion while having the standard radio by using bluetooth while simultaneously using the phones bluetooth feature for phone calls.
