Drivetrain Milltek, Borla S, or JCW Exhaust?
Milltek, Borla S, or JCW Exhaust?
I have a 2006 GP which came with the JCW exhaust. It was too quiet. I removed the JCW resonator and it snapped and crackled too much. I than installed my old Borla Sport and it is a little too loud inside the car when cruising on the highway (no back seat or insulation in the rear of the GP). I am thinking of installing a Milltek Cat Back exhaust. I would like something louder than the stock JCW but with less cruising drone, inside the car, than Borla Sport. I do not mind (actually like) loud exhaust during acceralation.
I have thought about installing dynamat in the rear but do not really think that will reduce the Borla Sport cruising drone enough.
Would the Milltek be the best choice for the GP and my constraints?
Any other suggestions?

I had the Miltek and loved the sound. I didn't think it droned but unfortunately it crackled and poped on throttle lift-off. The Miltek will sound much like the JCW exhaust w/o the resonater, thats the sysetem I have now. If you don't like the crackle then this is not the system for you.
I think dynamat would help a great deal with the drone. It'd be the cheapest thing to try so you might as well start there..
Thanks for the insights.
Personally, I like the volume of the Borla Sport (especially when having fun in the canyons) but people, such as my wife, who ride with me have a difficult time with the loudness of the exhaust drone on the highway. Sometimes it is difficult to talk. I frequently have to downshift into 5th on the highway to get the RPMs into the 4000 range to cut the drone that occurs around 3000 RPM. Kind of impacts the highway fuel economy if I must criuse in 5th gear.
If I were to switch to Milltek, I figure it would cost about the same as dynamat because I would sale the Borla and probably the JCW exhausts.
So far, it sounds like the best choice would be to try dynamat.

If you think thats loud, go try out a custom or 3inch...
GO LOUD or GO HOME!!!!
Borla S is the loudest of 3 . So yeah Borla..!
Installed a Milltek on my MCS about a week ago. Great sound when you get on it, but not obnoxious. Absolutely no drone at all when cruising. A great exhaust!

Just a thought but won't adding dynamat add weight that the GP is prized for not having? :impatient
I'm wrestling with which exhaust to add to my stocker '06 MCS ... I'm leaning towards the magnaflow at this time but worry about drone also...

Most likely, no matter what you get as far as exhaust, It's going to drone somewhat with no back seat. I know every time I have my back seat down I hear my exhaust (stock, oneball and now Milltek). With no seat at all it must be louder. Sounds like the Dynamat is the best $ way to go.
Don't forget to stuff some foam or old towels into the side cubbies in the rear as well. You may want to try that first.
Milltek is a good choice. I know exactly what you are up against. The Milltec is a little louder than the JCW system and definitely does not drone at highway speeds. It was my noise solution and everyone that hears the sound of my car, from both inside and out, agrees that it sounds good. Good luck!
i went from a Borla Race to the Milltek, and couldnt be happier.
I loved the borla about 90% of the time. Nice tone, loud strong sound, and all that good stuff. Bad stuff was a drone at 100km/h (highway speeds, 60mph or so).
Milltek made me realize how loud it actually was inside the car. It went from what i thought was an OK sound with a bit of drone, to wow, its quiet inside the car, and no drone. Outside the car, still has a nice roar when over 3000 rpms

BUGS ...
Do you still have the Borla RACE ???
I am looking for one or to trade a SPORT for a RACE
sorry about the hijack ....
dyna mat really makes a BIG difference (so does turning the AC to recycle and / or cracking the sun roof)

Another vote for Milltek. The quality and fit are excellent. However, I agree that when I have my rear seats folded down I can hear the exhaust much more and if I did not have them at all I would be looking into dynamat.
Cheers and good luck....with the Milltek.

One word... DINAN, just got mine installed today, crusing at 70mph, couldnt hear it... Idel....little lounder than stock....2500-5000rpm range while getting on it it let you know its there not obnoxis (cant spell) but a REALLY nice tone LOVE IT! it has the popping but not crazy bad or none at all, overall its a sweet sweet system... I would HIGHLY reccomend it.
nope. Traded for a Milltek back in the fall
Well, I decided to remove the Borla Sport and install a Milltek.
In general, I am sad to see the Borla Sport go because it had an awesome sound but the Milltek is much better cruising on the highway. Here are my impressions on the Milltek.
- Install went fine. The pipes are centered at the rear exit but not straight. I will have to see if I can bend one of the hangers to get the pipe tips even. I think other people have complained about the same problem.
- Milltek is a little louder than the stock JCW. About the same loudness as the JCW without its resonator. Much quieter than the Borla Sport.
- The tone is deeper than the Stock JCW and the JCW without Resonator. Tone is about the same as the Borla Sport (but not as loud).
- The throttle lift-off pop (gurgle) is nice sounding with the Milltek. About the same as the Stock JCW. No snap, crackle, & pop as I had with the JCW without resonator (which was very annoying to me). Less gurgle/pop than the Borla Sports which is OK because even though the Borla pop was a good tone it did pop a lot more, I guess because of less restriction.
- The Milltek is nice cruising on the highway. About the same as the JCW. Much better than the Borla Sport.
- The Milltek has the same 6000 - 7000 RPM whoosh as the JCW during full throttle. I do not like the whoosh. Borla Sport had just a little whoosh.
- The Milltek sounds OK during acceleration, about the same loudness as the JCW without resonator but with a deeper tone. However, the Milltek is not ever close to the cool sound the Borla made during acceleration. I miss the Borla Sport sound.
- I did not made horsepower runs to measure the difference between the different exhausts.
Overall, this was a good choice for me. I like the sound of the Milltek better than the JCW. However, I would not recommend that you sell the JCW exhaust to go to the Milltek because the difference is not worth the cost. It was fine for me because I sold the JCW exhaust and have the Borla Sport to sell in order to recoup most of the cost of the Milltek.
