WMS SportBox RAF

I wanted to be sure that the folks who have been asking get the info they want. I also wanted to ask for any feedback you may have - things you were curious about.

Here's the link with pictures.

Some of the things we have already addressed or are currently working on...

Thermal Coating
We are not fans of thermal coatings. They simply don't stay put well enough for us to warranty it (they aren't very durable on this type of application), and with the refractivity of stainless steel (which is one of the reasons we used that over a painted mild steel), it just doesn't make a big enough difference in the box's internal temps. If really interested in reducing the box heat transfer, we have another option that will be released with the box.

Silicone Hose
I am working on sourcing a hose that will fit the SportBox RAF as well as other intakes out there. It has been low on the priority list due to our other development commitments with the new CAI and our exhaust system. I expect to have one by the end of the year at the latest.

Hood Scoops
The SportBox RAF was designed to work with the intercooler cover, so it will work with any of the hood scoops on the market.

Aftermarket Intercoolers
The SportBox is designed to work with any intercooler, but the RAF currently works only with the stock intercooler. I will be working on fitting the RAF to the GRS intercooler in the first quarter of 2007. Because the box is modular, it can be ordered without the RAF then added to later - the provision for the RAF is on all SportBoxes.

Automatic
The SportBox RAF does fit the automatic.

Let me know if there are any other questions, ideas or input.

Thanks!
Randy

Is there some kind of duct that will go from the scoop to the box...

Can you elaborate a little more on how the RAF system will work?

PARTSMAN,

Yes, and you are looking at it. The scoop attaches to the intercooler diverter where you see the flange, and then goes into the side of the box - right there in the picture. We have done quite a bit of pressure testing to assure function of the design. It is optimized, and functions well at just about any speed of forward movement. The duct is the bonnet scoop itself and the stock diverter.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,
Randy

It attaches right to the rear drivers side corner of the stock diverter?

The hood seal will have to be relocated to open up that area, yes? no?

No - wait to see it installed and it will make sense. I plan to have pics of the set up within the week. I removed it to take catalog pics.

Thanks!

I can already see a sticker for this box...MINI wings with an RAF red, white and blue roundel in the middle.

That's the point of the thread, for Randy to generate interest in his product. Way to go Randy!
Why do others feel as if they have to take it over?

I've always liked what I've heard about the people over at M7. It's comments / attitude like this that turn people off.

Sure WMS has had it's problems with customer service, etc. And I'm not saying that Randy's perfect, but one of the things that people have always liked about Randy is that he's one of the nicest guys around. That goes a long way with people today .

proper coatings will stick to stainless steel, especially on a low temp item like an airbox. a proper coating will also lower the ability of the SS to transfer heat.

Please don't just focus on what Will is saying. His response had no more attitude than camelpilot's.

This thread has nothing to do with that, so please don't start.

I've seen several race cars with something similar, notably the ESX drag cars.

edit for pic:

Agreed, unfortunately vendors are held to a different standard.

Will @ M7, I'm sure you didn't intend your comments to sound that way. Words are easily misconstrued when they're typed. Thanks for clarifying.

However, one of my concerns is that I don't see why M7 needs to add unnecessary comments to a thread started by WMS.

Isn't that what you were trying to do in your very first post in the thread? Educate on something one does not know?

hehehe, just because YOU dont know about the term "refractivity" being used with regards to metals, does not mean it isn't.

You need the educating hence the tone of my previous post, and you are about to get schooled again. I thought you were smarter than that.

It's totally correct for the term refractivity to be used with regards to metals. It's used everywhere, all the time, dont ask me why. Maybe it's because heat is a wave and a metal can be a medium??

Anyway, I can link you from one of the 12 pages of google search results from the web if you like.

I dont mean to start a little pilot light here or anything, I just dont see the point of your first post is all. I obviously know as much about Metal Refractivity as you do. :P

Now, to keep this thread on topic... a roundel sticker with MINI wings is a great idea. I'm still trying to find a place that can do a sweet custom engraving on the top piece. Now THAT would be trick.

It would have been easy to just drop it and let it go but i guess fighting over the internet is just as smart.

Why should Matt be quite? This a public forum. BS flags should be waved when needed.

Please keep the thread on topic, lest it find itself melted down in a refractory furnace.

Will this work with the DFIC scoop?
