How much heat does the ram air pick up going from the scoop to the CAI box? I would think under certain conditions such as stop and go traffic the ram air would be quite hot when it reached the intake box. The cowl air does not need to travel over a hot engine.

Why would you even care how a performance part performs in stop and go traffic? If you're in stop and go traffic, it really doesnt matter how anything performs. (Unless of course it's part of a cars cooling system)

If anything, Webb's CAI would offer an additional flow path that would aid in cooling the CAI back down once out of stop & go.

Add another checkmark to the PRO column for the RAF.

Is there any other CAI on the market which channels air from the front of the car directly to the box? If not, Webb's design has more than one unique advantage.

With this and the upcoming exhaust, I might as well start taking the MINI off the car and adding the WMS badges...

Hey, that's not a bad idea....

If you're staging at the strip or in the pits....same deal. Heat soak .....bad. Less stuff to heat soak... good.

Actually, the RAF i in a pretty good position to avoid engine heat. One of the reasons I used stainless is because of the material's ability to avoid heat soak (when compared to other metals). As I stated, this will be a modular piece with lots of options, including thermal blanketing. That may be an option to seriously consider if you know you will be in stop and go traffic. Even without it, this CAI offers more cooling than others on the market even in stop and go.

Keep the questions coming!

Thanks,
Randy

OK.
When you gonna ship me one? <--- That's a question BTW

You know I'll probably end up buying one anyway. You know I'm a CAI ho.

True, but its gotta recover faster too. While that won't help much in the 1/4 mile or autox, its something everyday driving or track folks should find benefit from

Insulation... Whenever I see that gold reflective stuff the first thing that comes to mind is NASA lunar lander (bling factor)

So good you had to quote it twice eh?

Not just bling. It is a broad spectrum insulator so it works well on the nasty radiation in space too.

I will be sure to get one to obe - I want to have as much independent data as possible, and as much test input as possible. We build our products then test them, then release them!

Thanks!

Perhaps not. He's on record as disagreeing with the DFIC design, and the RBH-DF scoop is for the DFIC, not standard or enlarged down-draft ICs. I doubt there's more than 300 DFICs out there, whereas there are 10s of 1000s of OEM ICs in the US alone, which is the market he's aiming at. Randy is an innovative designer, a great mechanic and invested in the MINI performance market--I'd say he's onto a good thing with his new CAI and RAF. The guy fooling around with bigger scoops for the DFIC is a part-time weekend tinkerer at best, trust me.

cheers,

Ditto that on Christmas... Santa (aka: my wife) has been asking for a wish list. I've been very good this year!

I read all 119 posts so far, but I might have missed it... Are there any issues with water up-take from the front opening of the RAF? In heavy rain, I would imagine that the hood scoop takes in a significant amount of water. What happens if this water enters the front opeing of the RAF? Does it have an exit pathway? Will it soak the filter? Does that even matter?

I'm eagerly awaiting release date and pricing details.

Thanks!

I read somewhere that the box will have a drain for water. Randy just needs to make sure it will drain faster than the scoop will let it in. Even so, in order to do damage, you would really have to get a lot of water into the cylinders. Hydrolock usually occurs when your driving though deep water and suck a whole lot of it in.

I'd have to see one in person but from the way it was described it pulls air from the back side of the diverter closest to the airbox. If this is the case I would assume it would fall through the intercooler fins before it made it that far. Anything that would make it that far however would most likley just fall to the bottom of the box, i'd think.
